Volkswagen Golf R400 revealed; Beijing motor show report; Mitsubishi Evo goodbye; Vauxhall Corsa VXR Clubsport driven; BMW M235i tested; Ford Escort RS Turbo buying guide

Storming onto this week's cover is Volkswagen's Golf R400 concept, which promises to deliver supercar-like performance in a hatchback package.

With 395bhp on tap it's taking direct aim at the likes of the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG and the upcoming second-gen Audi RS3, and initial reports suggest that it might make it into production.

Our news section features the latest on the next Mazda MX-5 and all the latest from the Beijing motor show – including Land Rover's latest Discovery concept and future plans, the new Audi TT offroad concept, and the first model from Citroën's standalone Chinese 'DS' sub-brand.

An eclectic range of cars are on test this week, from the efficient and compact Volkswagen Polo to the rorty yet practical Volvo V60 Polestar, while the hot BMW M235i is the focus of the comprehensive eight-page road test.

We also wave goodbye to the Mercedes SLS, testing the 'Final Edition', and the Mitsubishi Evo – which Matt Prior sends off in style by testing the highly regarded Mitsubishi Evo VI Makinen Edition.

Long-term updates this week include the departure of the long-running Mazda 6 from the Autocar fleet, while this week's used buying guide features on the oh-so-Eighties Ford Escort RS Turbo.
