Children must no longer be taught that Columbus “discovered America” and should learn more about minorities who fought alongside the British Army, Scottish government officials have said.

Teachers have been told the Scottish curriculum is too focused on the role of white soldiers, Winston Churchill and the Romans to the exclusion of other great empires. Lessons are also centred around Scottish inventions such as the telephone and steam engine as well as white poets such as Robert Burns and William Shakespeare.

In July, James Gillespie’s High School in Edinburgh said it would scrap To Kill A Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men, classic depictions of the United States in the Thirties , because of their “dated” approach to race.
