Blow to Munya as his deputy abandons him

Meru Governor Peter Munya has suffered a major blow after his deputy, Raphael Muriungi, said that he will not support his re-election bid.

In an exclusive interview with Muuga FM, Muriungi said that he will, however, be contesting for the Igembe South Parliamentary seat which is currently held by Mithika Linturi who has expressed interest in the Senatorial post.

The deputy governor said that he has not been comfortable in the position he currently holds saying that it does not give him an opportunity to serve the people of Meru.

He mentioned that his only duty has been to represent the Governor in functions when he is away or busy running other activities.

Muriungi served as the area MP between 2002 and 2007.

“The position I currently hold gives me no power to work for the people directly, it just involves representing the Governor in functions or working as his messenger,” said the deputy governor.

On the choice of party he will use to run for the Parliamentary seat, the deputy Governor said that he has already settled on the Democratic Party (DP) adding that he avoided Munya’s party since their relationship has not been too rosy.

He challenged other interested persons to join the Democratic Party saying that it will field candidates for all positions.

“The party is also supporting the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto,” he said.
