Employability tips from those in the know

updated on 30 November 2020

Lawyers and professionals who work with Nottingham Law School share their employability tips for students looking to pursue a legal career. Take some inspiration from the below quotes as you embark on this career path and make law applications.

  1. "Don't fall into the trap of trying to 'fit a mould' when applying for jobs. Your uniqueness is what sets you apart." - Christian Weaver, barrister at Garden Court Chambers

  2. “Don’t discount work experience that isn't within your chosen field – many skills are transferable and you will be able to provide a wider range of examples.” - Alicia Corby, solicitor at Gateley Legal

  3. “Learn about yourself and the sort of organisation you want to work in. In law, there are many variables to consider, to name a few: in-house/private practice, the practice area, the size, dynamic and culture of the firm and the location. It’s worth thinking about what sort of firm suits your skillset and qualities.” - Billy Shaw, solicitor at Rotheras

  4. “Show that you are a team player and are someone that provides solutions, not problems." - Mark Wood, partner at Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP

  5. “Don't overlook the basics (proof reading, tailoring your application, research) and exhibit positivity, adaptability, a growth mindset and strong emotional intelligence.” - Laura Pinkney, head of Nottingham Law School’s legal advice centre

  6. “Know your USP. Everyone is different right, so really knowing what is different about you from everyone else will really help you stand out. You’ll undoubtedly be able to use this to your advantage as your unique selling point and be more authentic as a result.” - Tom Lyas, talent acquisition manager at Browne Jacobson LLP

  7. “Firstly, always check the spelling and grammar of any written application you make. Secondly, always treat every interview as an exercise in advocacy and persuasion.” - Alastair Hodge, barrister at 5 Essex Court

  8. “Take advantage of virtual internship programmes to increase your experience, gain practical work skills and broaden your understanding of other sectors. Check out Forage and have a go at a programme that appeals to you.” - Ed Mosley, law careers consultant at Nottingham Law School

  9. “Be adaptable and willing to be challenged.” - Victoria Dunstall, partner at Actons Solicitors

  10. "Being employable is about having character, and allowing your personality to differentiate you.  An employer's team values and culture are more important to it than ever, in a competitive market where identity is key.  Stand out, have confidence in your strengths, and know your audience." - Roland Gray partner at Dentons
