SIBU: A young worker was killed when fire struck a lorry workshop at Ding Lik Kwong Road on Sunday night.

It is believed that Hasmi Belangkang, 19, was sleeping alone in the workshop as his two co-workers had returned to Mukah for the weekend break.

A spokesperson from Sibu fire station had yet to confirm the cause of the fire, but according to a source, there was a loud explosion heard that night.

Both the police and the firefighters were unable to confirm whether the youth’s death was due to being burned alive or having suffocated after being trapped inside the building.

Firefighters found him lying on the floor, with burn marks on his body.

The paramedics from Sibu Hospital later confirmed that the victim died on the spot.

According to a firefighter, they arrived 14 minutes after receiving a distress call around 10.30pm.

“When we arrived, nearby residents were trying to put out the fire with extinguishers,” he said.

A worker from a nearby workshop within the industrial zone confirmed that he saw smoke rising from the building.

“This prompted some of us (workers staying in other workshops) to rush over with fire extinguishers in our attempt to put out the flames,” he said.

It is learnt that Hasmi hailed from Rumah Rawing in Nanga Beguang, Song.

The body is now at Sibu Hospital mortuary.
