SPRINGFIELD — A section of Roosevelt Avenue between Bay Street and Memorial Avenue will be closed for bridge construction Tuesday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Detour signs will be set up for motorists to follow, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The closing will allow completion of an $8.4 million bridge construction project that began in 2011. Two Roosevelt Avenue bridges over the CSX main railroad line and the CSX spur line are being raised to allow for double-stack freight trains.

“It’s a culmination of all the work’s that been done” on Roosevelt" since 2011, said James Leydon, communication director for Mayor Domenic Sarno.

The new bridge over the main line near Bay Street features a three-span steel beam superstructure with a reinforced concrete deck.

The bridge over the spur line near Cottage Street has a single span steel beam superstructure with a reinforced concrete deck.

Sidewalks have been added for both bridges, and the road approaching the Bay Street bridge has been rebuilt, according to the state.
