I Heart Brunch

I have never been a churchgoer, but recently I enrolled in a Sunday School session with Professor Thom. The East Village staple is known more for raucous gatherings of Red Sox Fans in October than a hearty brunch, but that didn’t stop Peter Pancake and me from stopping in for an afternoon meal.

As with any great sports bar, Professor Thoms’ has a reputation for great bar food and it is one of my favorite East Village bars to grab a bite. The appetizer platters, burgers and sandwiches all hit the spot and have hit my spot countless times over the last few years. However, I had never experienced their brunch menu which, unlike many brunch spots in the city, is half dedicated to lunch items such as salads, wraps and sandwiches that Professor Thoms’ is known for.

Although it pleased to me see the lunch options, on this day I was in a breakfast mood, so I went with the Breakfast Burrito. Filled with eggs, peppers, sausage, cheese, avocado, and served with home made potato chips (they were out of hash browns), the burrito was superb.

As a burrito traditionalist, I refuse to eat a burrito, breakfast or otherwise, with a fork and knife. Often, my main complaint about a burrito will be its inability to stay in one piece. But this Breakfast Burrito was constructed beautifully, not only staying secure throughout the entire meal, but brilliantly providing a mixture of contents in every bite. The avocado didn’t overpower and the eggs, prepared as an omelet with the sausage and peppers cooked in, were fantastic. The cheese was melted and held the burrito together, both literally and figuratively.

For my complimentary beverage, I went with a Bloody Mary, which to my delight was served in a pint glass. I was also pleasantly surprised that I was given the choice of spicy or mild, and as a fan of a little spice, I ordered medium. To be honest, even as a fan of a spice, it was actually a bit hot even for my liking, but still delicious. A good sign for Bloody Mary aficionados, but also something to keep in mind if you’re sensitive to the heat.

It is always nice realizing a favorite bar also hosts a fantastic brunch. Instead of heading there strictly on Saturday nights or for sporting events, Professor Thoms’ passes the brunch test and I’ll definitely be returning for weekend brunch.
