Nyeri MCAs have proposed Sh66 million for compensation, burial expenses and insurance premium of the late Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru.

The family will receive Sh36 million for compensation and another Sh10 million for burial expenses, while Sh20 million will be for insurance.

Gakuru died in a road accident at Makenji area on the Nairobi–Murang’a highway on November 7.

The report was tabled to the members of the Budget and Appropriations Committee on Thursday.

It will then be debated by the County Assembly soon for adoption.

This will pave way for Governor Mutahi Kahiga to append a signature to okay the budget.

But the issue has elicited outcry in the social media.

More on this:

Most residents said the amount was too large and could be used to address other urgent matters in the county like healthcare.

The ward representatives have at the same time scrapped the Sh14 million they had earlier allocated for the purchase of a new vehicle for the governor.

The budget committee chair Gibson Wahinya said the county is grappling with a huge wage bill that is eating into development funds.

He said the county’s wage bill stands at 44 per cent as opposed to the 35 per cent provided for in the Constitution.
