Umno Langkawi MP, Datuk Nawawi Ahmad today apologised via his Facebook page for creating a furore on social media for his remarks about the late Karpal Singh’s death.

He expressed his regret and apologised to the late Karpal’s family and to the public.

Nawawi said, “I would like to express my deep remorse and regret on what transpired the last two days about my posting on my private Facebook account pertaining to a status of what happened to the late YB Karpal Singh.”

He also admits his remarks were needless and it was such a careless posting which ignored the sensitivity of Karpal’s family and his supporters.

“Words cannot express how sorry I am, and how necessary it is for me to apologise to the family of the late YB Karpal Singh and everyone who I have offended due to a needless and careless posting. Although I have a few people or admintrators to update my status on Facebook, I take full responsibility on what has happened,” Nawawi added.

Hours after Karpal was killed in a road accident on Thursday, Nawawi had posted a comment which read: "Who wants to challenge Karpal Singh? Please submit your name," referring to a news report on Karpal's famous words "over my dead body" in stating his opposition to having an Islamic state.

Nawawi had retracted the Facebook posting three hours later but refused to apologise, insisting that the message was not meant for official consumption.

The Malaysian Insider reported that a Facebook user Shamsul Kamal Ariffin Mohd Nasir, 42, told the news portal Friday that Nawawi, during a private Facebook chat, had compared the deceased with Abu Jahal, a violent figure who fought early Muslims in Mecca.
