Netflix has given a 13-episode order to half-hour comedy series “Grace and Frankie” starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, as the leading Internet subscription-video service continues to build out its originals lineup.
The project hails from “Friends” co-creator Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris. Paula Weinstein and David Ellison’s Skydance Prods. are producing for Netflix.
Single-camera series revolves around two longtime rivals who are brought together when their husbands decide to run off together to get married. Project reunites Fonda (pictured, above) and Tomlin, who both co-starred with Dolly Parton in the 1980 feature hit “9 to 5.”
Netflix said “Grace and Frankie” is targeted to premiere in the summer of 2015.
“Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are among the funniest and most formidable actresses ever and it’s an incredible privilege to give them the opportunity to run riot on Netflix,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in announcing the pickup. “The show created for them by Marta and Howard is warm, very funny and anything but wholesome. We can’t wait.”
In addition to Weinstein, Fonda and Tomlin, Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross are exec producers of “Grace and Frankie.”

The show expands the comedy lineup for Netflix, which brought back “Arrested Development” for a fourth season last year, seven years after it was canceled by Fox. Other Netflix series in the comedy genre include Ricky Gervais’ comedy-drama “Derek.” Meanwhile, Netflix will submit prison drama “Orange Is the New Black” from Jenji Kohan for Emmy Awards consideration in the comedy category.
