BEREA, Ohio – New football bosses often hire old acquaintances.

Browns General Manager Ray Farmer has tapped into his time with the Kansas City Chiefs to select a new head team physician.

The club announced Thursday it had hired James Voos, M.D. Voos, an orthopedic surgeon, has five years of NFL experience, including three seasons with the Chiefs (2011-13) and two with the New York Giants (2009-10).

The Browns also finalized their medical-services team with University Hospitals Drs. Michael Salata, Reuben Gobezie and Robert Truax. Salata and Gobezie will serve as associate orthopedists, while Truax represents the team’s lead medical physician.

The doctors will work closely with Browns head athletic trainer Joe Sheehan.

“As a former NFL player, I have a special understanding of a medical staff’s significance and impact,” said Farmer, a former director of pro personnel for the Chiefs, in a statement. “Especially knowing Dr. Voos’ reputation with the Chiefs, I’m confident this staff, working in conjunction with Joe Sheehan and his staff, will be a strong addition to our team’s overall health and well-being, on and off the field. Personally and professionally, I'm excited for the opportunity to work with Dr. Voos.”

The Browns needed a new team physician and staff after the franchise ended a 40-year partnership with the Cleveland Clinic and joined forces with University Hospitals in January. The new affiliation is worth $30 million over 10 years for the Browns.

Beyond his work with the Browns, Voos also has been named director for University Hospitals’ sports medicine program, according to a team release.

Several members of the medical staff have been on board since at least February and accompanied the Browns to the NFL Scouting Combine. Dr. David Chao, who writes for the National Football Post, noted last month that the Browns didn't have a lead team physician at the combine.

“In my 19 years attending and working at the Combine, I never encountered a situation where a club did not have lead team physicians in place,” Chao wrote.

Voos served his orthopedic residency and sports medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, according to the Browns release. The magna cum laude at Drake also played one year of football for the school as defensive back.

“I am excited for the opportunity to serve the Cleveland Browns organization,” Voos said in a statement released by the team. “The safety and wellness of the players is the primary goal of our medical team. Our vision is to provide the players and the community with high-quality and innovative healthcare with University Hospitals.”
