TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Alabama gymnastics is 5-for-5 with NCAA Elite 89 awards thanks to another gymnast with a 4.0.

Sophomore

Lauren Beers

collected the Crimson Tide's fifth consecutive Elite 89 award, which goes to the athlete

with the highest cumulative grade point average at the final site of each of the NCAA's 89 championships. Since the award came into existence in 2010, Alabama's been the only team represented in gymnastics.
Beers, an exercise science major from Warren Center, Pa., joins past Alabama winners Kassi Price (2010), Rachel Terry (2011-12) and Kim Jacob (2013).

"No other school has five winners in one sport," Alabama coach Sarah Patterson said in a university release. "That's not something that we take for granted - we understand that we're in the midst of something that is truly special. When Lauren's name was called it took me back to when Kassi won the first award. Then I thought of Rachel winning back-to-back honors at the same time that we were winning back-to-back national championships and then Kim winning last year in Los Angeles. It's just an amazing time for our program in so many ways."

Beers, who notched a 4.0 GPA, received the award at Wednesday's NCAA Championship banquet in Birmingham.

The NCAA Championship semifinals are set for Friday at Birmingham's BJCC Arena. Alabama will compete in the evening session.
