Man accused of dropping backpack near Boston Marathon finish line due in court

BOSTON – Authorities say a man taken into custody near the Boston Marathon finish line carrying a backpack containing a rice cooker is scheduled to appear in court.

The Suffolk district attorney’s office says the 25-year-old man from Wakefield is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Boston Municipal Court.

Officials have not identified him.

The man was stopped by an officer Tuesday, the anniversary of the bombings, after he was spotted walking down the middle of a street, barefoot and shrouded in black, in pouring rain.

The backpack was destroyed.

A second suspicious backpack was determined to have been left behind by a media outlet and was not a danger.

On Tuesday, survivors, first responders and relatives of those killed last year marked the day with tributes. Former Mayor Thomas Menino and Vice-President Joe Biden were among those who spoke at the nearby Hynes Convention Center. A moment of silence was held at the finish line in the afternoon.
