The area around the Boston Marathon finish line was evacuated Tuesday evening after two backpacks were left there unattended. Police moved people off of Boylston Street between Fairfield Street and Clarendon Street.

After a police bomb squad investigated the scene, two loud booms were heard around 9 p.m. and just after 9:30 p.m. The Boston Police Department later confirmed that the backpacks had been "disrupted for precautionary reasons." As of Wednesday morning, police have not said what was in the backpacks.

A male suspect was taken into custody in connection with the backpacks, police said. The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Kevin Edson, of Boston, according to a Boston Globe report. Boston police superintendent Randall Halstead said the suspect told officers he had rice cooker in the bag, according to the Globe.

Halstead said police were investigating who owned the second bag.

The Globe reported Edson is scheduled to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Wednesday on charges of threatening battery, possession of a hoax device, threat to commit a crime, disturbing the peace, disturbing a public assembly, and disorderly conduct.
According to a WBZ report, their photographers on the scene “saw a person with a backpack screaming 'Boston Strong' before police cleared everyone from the area.” The report also said witnesses said the man was wearing a long black veil.

Boston police used the incident to again discourage visitors from bringing backpacks to the marathon.

The incident happened on the anniversary of the bombings at the 2013 marathon. Memorials were held throughout the day marking the anniversary.
