Vitamins and mineral play an important role in the diet of pregnant women.

A new study shows that eating the right food can have a significant impact on your child's health.

In this week's health matters, Maggie Poteau uncovers the one thing a pregnant woman can eat that can help a child's early cognitive development.

The right time to worry about your child's cognitive skills may not be after your child is born.

Researchers at the University of Alberta found that pregnant women who eat more fruit may help their child's cognitive development.

Researchers say that children of women who ate six or seven servings of fruit or fruit juice per day while pregnant, scored better on thinking and memory tests than other children a year after birth.

This held true even after considering gestational age of the child.

Further research is needed to look for long-term benefits of increased fruit consumption during pregnancy, to see if it affects thinking skills beyond one year of life as well as whether higher fruit intake affects other parts of a child's brain.

The findings appear in the journal EBioMedicine.
