HALIFAX -- Talks aimed at averting a strike by 2,400 Halifax-area nurses are set to resume Monday.

The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union and the Capital Health District Authority say they have agreed to resume talks after receiving a call from mediator Bruce Outhouse.

The nurses will be in a legal strike position on Thursday.

Talks reached an impasse Sunday.

The health authority says it has started cancelling elective surgeries scheduled for early next week because of the possible walkout.

Spokesman John Gillis says elective surgeries were being cancelled for Monday and Tuesday at various Halifax hospitals, and some patients were being moved to hospitals outside the city.

Premier Stephen McNeil says he has asked for an assessment of the arrangements being made to cover emergency services in the event of a strike.
