Water shouldn't be bottled, but instead, boxed - READ MORE

A sustainable alternative to your regular old bottle of water...

You might have heard recently that San Francisco has become the first major US city to ban the sale of single-use plastic water bottles. The scheme will be carried out over a series of phases, the first beginning in October 2014, and is to combat the environmental impacts of single-use-plastic bottles, of which a majority end up in landfills and never fully decompose.

So, what about if we never bottled water at all?

This is the idea behind Boxed Water is Better , a startup from Michigan who've embarked on an interesting venture to create a sustainable alternative to bottled water, by packaging it in a box instead. A box with impressive environmental credentials at that.

About 76% of the box is from renewable resources, the paper only from certified forests, it's recyclable and packs flat for light, efficient shipping. Also they donate 10 percent of their profits to reforestation projects and another 10 percent to water conservation foundations.

Company founder Benjamin Gott calls his venture "part sustainable water company, part art project, part philanthropic project, and completely curious."

Sustainability and giving back is at the foundation of Boxed Water is Better , and they're another example of innovation for a sustainable future reliant on renewables.

Drinking from the tap is always your best option, but wouldn't it be great to have more packaging-concious water brands out there. Someday soon, plastic bottles may be a thing of the past, and we're sure boxed water tastes better!
