A budget bottle of red wine from the supermarket giant has been crowned the best in show at the coveted Decanter World Wine Awards, with more than 16,000 bottles entered.

The company’s La Moneda Reserve Malbec from Chile, which costs a wallet-friendly £4.37, emerged as the surprise winner of a blind taste test, winning the illustrious Platinum Best in Show title at the industry awards.

Less than a fiver: La Moneda Reserve Malbec

A panel of 240 international experts awarded the low-cost tipple the top prize in the best red single varietal £15 red wine category, praising it for its “succulent juicy berries on the palate”.

Describing the wine as tasting of “freshly crushed black fruit, creamy vanilla yoghurt and pepper spice” the wine experts said it had “an excellent freshness” with punch that was “full of energy with a great price point”.

The moreish Malbec beat off stiff competition from 600 other Chilean reds to win its category, and was shortlisted before going on to claim the best in show title.
