What is it?

The My Ends Homecooked project has put together an offer of three different types of training to help support the awareness and understanding of Mental Health in the Tottenham Hale area of Haringey. The three types of training available are:

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training (2 day course)

Our Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses are for anyone who works with, lives with or supports young people aged 8-18 in Tottenham Hale, Haringey.

We will train the adults in a young person’s life to have the skills and confidence to step in, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, they can speed up a young person’s recovery, stop issues from developing into a crisis, and ultimately save lives.

But more than that, by giving these adults the information and skills to look after their own mental health, we want them to set an example for young people. We want adults to be able to show young people that mental ill health is a part of life in just the same way as physical ill health, that it’s OK to talk about and it’s OK to ask for help.

We hope that by giving people the tools to open up these conversations, we can empower them to create mentally healthy, supportive environments in their families, schools, youth groups and communities.

Trauma-informed training

Trauma-informed practice training aims to equip workers and organisational structures across the health, social care, and justice sectors with the knowledge and skills to mitigate some of these negative and costly effects. Due to the potentially widespread beneficial effects that a trauma informed approach may have.

Trauma informed practice is not designed specifically to treat trauma related difficulties. Instead it seeks to address the barriers that those affected by trauma can experience while accessing the care, support and treatment they require for a healthy life. Those most in need may also be hardest to reach and most unlikely to engage with services. Trauma informed practice seeks to ensure that services can:

  • recognise that trauma is common
  • realise these experiences might have a range of impacts which is relevant to the service you are delivering to this individual
  • respond safely and effectively, ensuring that those who require it are referred for and receive the necessary trauma specific interventions for recovery

The Knowledge and Skills framework has been built up based both on the latest theory and evidence in the area but, very importantly, also drawing from the experiences and opinions of people who had lived through trauma, abuse and adversity.
