Broncos wide receiver Cody Latimer was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor warrant.

Broncos wide receiver Cody Latimer was arrested early Monday on a misdemeanor warrant for failing to appear in Denver court on a traffic violation case, authorities say.

Latimer, 23, was taken into custody by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and booked into jail, according to Julie Brooks, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

His arrest was first reported by KUSA-TV.

Brooks said Latimer was arrested after he called authorities about 2:30 a.m. to report a domestic disturbance between him and his girlfriend.

Latimer reported that she had “put her hands on him,” according to the sheriff’s office incident report, Brooks said.

Latimer was the victim, according to Brooks.

Deputies referred the case to Denver police after realizing the address where the incident happened was inside Denver’s city limits, according to Brooks. Latimer was arrested when a background check showed the warrant.

His girlfriend, 25-year-old Jaimee Rando, was taken into custody by Denver police on suspicion of assault, according to the Denver Police Department’s arrest records.

Denver police said they did not immediately have information on the case.

“I reached out to the team on Monday to let them know of a personal issue that I dealt with over the weekend,” Latimer said in a statement released Tuesday on Twitter. “I believe I handled it the right way, but I had no idea of the unrelated unpaid traffic ticket. That’s completely on me, and I took care of that today. … Back to football”

Latimer was absent from the Broncos’ team activities Tuesday for what coach Gary Kubiak called “a personal issue,” but he is expected to be back Wednesday.

The Broncos’ second-round draft pick (No. 56) from Indiana in 2014, Latimer has played in 22 games (one start) and three playoff games in his two years with the team, catching eight passes for 82 yards and one touchdown. He also has been used on special teams and last season recorded four total tackles (three solo).

This season, Latimer is expected to vie for more playing time in Kubiak’s system but is competing with five returning receivers — Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Bennie Fowler, Jordan Norwood and Jordan Taylor. His biggest opening could come on special teams as the Broncos look to fill the void left by safety David Bruton in free agency.

Last week, Latimer earned the praise of Kubiak as well as Sanders, who told local media he believes the Broncos have one of the league’s most underrated wide receiving corps in part “because no one really knows about Cody Latimer.”

“This guy can play some ball,” Sanders said. “Bennie can play. Jordan Norwood is quick. Not only that, Jordan (Taylor), I think he’s really going to have an opportunity to make the team this year and make a lot of plays. It’s going to be a unique wide receiver corps, and hopefully we can keep making those splash plays like we did last year.”
