PROFESSOR JOLIE: The London School of Economics has tapped Angelina Jolie as a professor in practice. She will contribute to guest lectures on women, peace and security for students in a newly created specialist master’s course.
As a visiting professor, Jolie will take part in lectures, workshops and events. She will join the team at the Centre for Women, Peace and Security to help formulate plans on topics such as gender equality and women’s rights.
Students can apply in September for the one-year program, which kicks off in 2017 and will focus on topics including women, peace and security, gender and militarization, and gender and human rights. The LSE said it is expecting 15 students to join the course in the 2017-18 academic year and noted that visiting professors in practice are usually appointed for two- or three-year terms.
Jolie moved to the U.K. with her husband Brad Pitt and their six children last March. Pitt is scheduled to film the sequel to Marc Forster’s “World War Z,” playing the role of Gerry Lane, while Jolie will focus on humanitarian work in the U.K.
“I am very encouraged by the creation of this master’s program,” Jolie said. “I hope other academic institutions will follow this example, as it is vital that we broaden the discussion on how to advance women’s rights and end impunity for crimes that disproportionately affect women, such as sexual violence in conflict. I am looking forward to teaching and to learning from the students as well as to sharing my own experiences of working alongside governments and the United Nations.”
