No No Nanette! at Our Local Cape Cod Summer Theatre
No, No, Nanette! program.
This year we decided to purchase a season’s ticket to The College Light Opera Company. Last evening I went to my first performance. I was pleasantly surprised. The sing, dancing and acting was excellent. It was enjoyable to see the actor’s youthful enthusiasm. As always it felt good to relax and laugh at the cleverly delivered lines. The evening was a welcome break during this very busy summer season.
A synopsis of the plot is, that it takes place in New York City. Young innocent Nanette gets a marriage proposal from her current beau, Tom Trainor, but wants to taste the Roaring Twenties before settling down. Her Bible salesman guardian, Jimmy Smith, would be worried if he wasn’t having trouble with three young lovelies who are threatening to blackmail him if he stops supporting them. He calls his lawyer, Billy Early, who tries to send Jimmy to Philadelphia so he can use Jimmy’s cottage in Atlantic City as a meeting place to buy off the girls: Flora from Frisco, Betty from Boston and Winnie from Washington. With the boys out of town, Lucille and Sue, Billy and Tommy’s wives, decide to go away for the weekend also. Nanette quarrels with Tom and with the help of her comic maid, Pauline, also run off for a fun time. Everyone ends up in Atlantic City, where Billy is blamed for Jimmy’s sins, causing no end of complications.

The original 1929 production of “NoNo Nanette!” was a story of a successful musical that almost didn’t happen. Composer Vincent Youmans, writer Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II had just produced “Wildflower”. one of the biggest musical successes of the 1920’s. For their next show Youmans and Harbach joined with Frank Mandel and H.H. Frazze to create “No No Nanette!”. The play had a disastrous opening in Detroit that led to firing the principals and led Frazee to take over the direction of the play. The play was rewritten and five new songs were written. Among them were “Tea For Two” and “I Want to be Happy”. These additions turned out to be among the most enduring songs of the musical.
“No No Nanette!” then opened in Chicago and played there for over a year before going to New York. It opened in the Globe Theatre in 1925 and was very well received. It ran for three hundred and twenty-one performances. In 1971 the show was revived and given a second Broadway premier and it is that version that CLOC is using.
