Orange is the new PGI
Farmers seeking Protected Geographical Indication distinction
Sóller farmers want their oranges to bear the PGI indication. Their initiative will start by renovating ancient orange trees currently growing in Sóller and Fornalutx, replacing them with newer crops to increase production and quality. Sant Bartomeu Agricultural Cooperative will donate over 1000 new trees to all those interested in taking part in the project.
Sóller valley has been home to orange trees ever since the Arabs introduced them in the 10th century. Oranges are so important for this Mallorcan town that the docks at Port de Sóller were built in the 18th century mainly to export the fruit.
But the 21st century has not been kind to Sóller oranges, and its production has sunk more than 60% since the year 2000, mainly because of the high costs involved in maintaining the crops. However, it seems like that is about to change, and the declaration of Sóller oranges as Protected Geographical Indication will mean a brighter future for this delicious Mallorcan produce.
