Makeup by request including foolproof winged eyeliner

Amazon_wingedeyeliner
Thanks to Nikki for asking for a cosmetics post! I use Mary Kay foundation after going to a party years ago and getting matched. I tried Prescriptives again after they brought it back and the color was perfect, but the foundation I bought was a bit cakey. I think I may try Virtual Skin next. So that’s why there’s no foundation recommendation. Let me know if you have one you like, I just find it very personal and based on your skintone. Also lipstick doesn’t really do it for me. Although I have plenty and use it there’s not one brand I love. Some of the products below I’ve used for years and some are from readers. If you have any recommendations for anything from Amazon or post ideas please comment with that as it helps!

A neutral eyeshadow palette with versatile gorgeous colors
Amazon_eyeshadow
I’ve recommended this eyeshadow at least twice. A couple of weeks ago I even ordered a new palette as my old one ran out of my favorite colors. This is a wonderful very affordable palette with so many pretty colors to make different looks. I have the nude exposed palette but the nude matte and nude natural palettes are also very nice. People call this
“smooth, blendable and pigmented” without a lot of fallout and say it’s just as good as more expensive premium palettes.

An eyeliner pen that lasts through sweat and tears
Amazon_eyeliner
I used to use Kat Von D’s tattoo liner but I switched to NYX, which is just as good for less than half the price. Reviewers write that this “will not smudge or transfer even if you cry or sweat” and that it stays on, even if you have oily eyelids. It also makes it “super easy to get that perfect line.”

A contour stick to define your best features
Amazon_contourstick
This is an excellent contour stick that you just apply directly and can blend with your hands. If you’re uncomfortable with contouring and worry it will give you Kardashian results, you can go lighter with it and this would be a nice starter product. (Don’t be discouraged by their photos of how to do this, there’s more below.) This helps define cheekbones and your jawline and can even make your nose look smaller. People say it “goes on smoothly and is easy to blend” and that it washes off easily. Some people say the universal shade is too light. I’m very pale and use medium. All I do is draw light lines down my nose and under my eyes and dark lines under my cheekbones, on the side of my nose, on my jawline and at the top of my forehead. I do not do triangles, spot zones or anything like that. It’s similar to this photo except I put on foundation first then just use the contour stick to make lines with two colors. Here’s a tutorial for it, I’ve linked to the relevant part, but again I don’t use this much highlighter. It works and I do think it makes my face look sharper. I’ve also used powder contouring, but this is easier.

Winged eyeliner stamps to make glam looks easy
Amazon_wingedeyeliner2
I don’t do winged eyeliner as I’ve tried to follow tutorials and it always turns out awful. Reader Ellie loves this product, which comes with two pens featuring eyeliner on one side and a stamp for either the left or the right eye on the other. She said that this makes it a breeze to make both eyes symmetrical. This comes in three sizes from small to large. Users call this “brilliant” and say it makes fast, easy, consistent and “perfect wings.” The eyeliner pen is also said to be very good.

Eyebrow stencils are a game changer for your face
Amazon_browstencils
I love Ardell brow perfection stencils and can vouch for them, but they’re not as highly rated as this kit, which has many more stencils. It really depends on the size of your face but they fit mine perfectly and I’ve used them for years. Filling your eyebrows makes a huge difference in your overall look and with these it’s so easy to get perfect brows. I just use Maybelline ultrabrow powder and have been wetting the brush for a more dramatic look. These come in different size and shape options from more elegant to full classic brow.

A sunscreen that blends like high end face cream
Amazon_sunscreen
Lila recommends this product from Japan, which you can buy on Amazon. She writes that “This stuff feels more like fancy face cream than any other sunscreen I’ve ever worn” and that “it disappears into skin and doesn’t smell of sunscreen or feel greasy, even after repeated applications.” Others call this fantastic and “the holy grail of sunscreen.”

A waterproof mascara that women rave about
Amazon_mascara
My favorite mascara is currently one that you can only buy overseas, it’s also L’oreal, but I know what I’m buying next after reading the reviews for L’oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise. This was recommended by Goofpuff in our last post. Women call this the “best waterproof mascara ever” and say it adds gorgeous volume and lasts all day without smudging or flaking. It’s also said to come off easily, which is always a concern with waterproof mascara. (Update: this previously linked to the non-waterproof version, which is here.)

A lash comb for perfectly separated lashes without clumps
Amazon_lashcomb
I used to use a lash comb by Rubigo, which is a brand that still exists but is hard to find. (On their website you have to order three combs to place an order.) I switched to Ardell, which is just as good. BTW you can get this at larger CVS stores if you don’t want to order in bulk. This is a product that I never want to go without. It’s so much more precise than the stupid plastic comb on the big dual lash brushes. A toothbrush doesn’t even come close to the results you can get with this lash comb, which gets out all the clumps and little extra bits. You won’t want to use the cover for this though as it can damage the comb. I can relate so much to the woman who wrote “I bought my first lash comb over 30 years ago and loved it but lost it.” YES. I have used one of these since I was a teenager too.

Little eyelash inserts that look glam but natural
Amazon_individualeyelashes
I’m too much of a scaredy cat to do a full false eyelash. Last year I ordered those high end magnetic eyelashes everyone was raving about. I hated them and returned them. These little false eyelash inserts can give you a beautiful, natural-looking lash. For a night out I just put on my full makeup as usual and stick two of these on the corner of each eye. I get compliments and hardly anyone can tell they’re falsies. You will need some glue with these. I stick a little on each lash and remove them at the end of the night. I recommended starting with the short version linked above but there’s also a combo pack available that comes with three sizes, the adhesive and remover so you can see what works for you.

Ooh I may get that palette and the contour stick. I use a smashbox contour palette now, and I like it because the powders are easy to blend, but I sometimes think I blend too much so that I look the same with or without it, haha.

For foundation I LOVE Bare Minerals Complexion rescue. It’s super light, lighter than a tinted moisturizer, but easy to layer more on and blend it. It has a SPF 30 and I love it for summer and winter (before I used to switch up what I wore depending on the season.)

    • Celebitchy says:

I have a smashbox palette too, it’s an older one and has the contour colors in it as well as eyeshadow, blush and lipgloss (useless) but it’s not as easy to use as this stick. I’ll do that for going out sometimes though.

  2. Becks1 says:

Also in general I really like NYX products. I find they are a lot of bang for the buck.

    • Other Renee says:

Becks, I agree about NYX. I use an NYX eye shadow base for my eyelids, and my eye shadow doesn’t budge until I take it off.

I know it’s a budget line but I love my Elf eye shadow colors and their two-tone rouge. It’s very delicate and maybe because it’s not powdery it looks way more natural than any powder rouge I used in the past.

Benefit mascara is far and away the best I’ve ever used. As soon as I started using it, my daughter said, “Hey, you’re eyelashes look great!” It was that obvious. Now she uses it too.

And finally, I’m beyond sad at having lost so much of my eyebrows. I haven’t done anything about it yet. They’re red (what’s left of them). Don’t know what to do. I’m scared of coloring them in, afraid I’ll look ridiculous.

      • Harryg says:

I bought one of those eye lash grow serums and put it in my brows, and it did help a bit. It was something basic from CVS. Someone recommended Babelash (I think Hot & Flashy, Youtube) for brows.
If brows are thinning at the outer ends it might be a sluggish thyroid. Large doses of kelp boost thyroid.

      • Other Renee says:

        Thanks, HarryG!

      • (THE OG)@Jan90067 says:

I use Latisse (lost brows and lashes from chemo); it really helps the lashes, not the brows so much. I also use Benefits Eyebrow pencil, and then LIGHTLY use the matching “filler” brow wand. Looks pretty natural.

      • terra says:

        @Other Renee

I know this is days late, but just in case you – or someone else – sees this I thought I’d chime in:

While waiting for a growth serum to help you can use a beginner’s eyebrow product in the meantime. I like ELF Brow Gel. It goes on in a snap and is basically idiot proof.

I stress plucked my brows nearly into extinction about a month ago while panicking over a sudden move and so had to search out a brow product for the first time in my life and am beyond pleased with the results.

I have red eyebrows too – natural redhead here, courtesy of my great-grandmother – and I use the lightest shade they make – Light Brown, I believe – and it looks completely natural and if any gets on my skin it rubs right off, yet doesn’t rub off of my brows.

    • Megan says:

I am ordering that eyeliner. I have been looking for a good one that doesn’t cost a fortune.

  3. Nacho_friend says:

Ugh I don’t wear makeup (except draw in my eyebrows daily and use a blush stick sometimes) bc I’m a sahm, but I’m thinking of getting a yumi lash lift bc I have Asian lashes 😩

  4. Victoria says:

I like hourglass the stick one for foundation, it’s like airbrushing and matte for those with oily skin. It’s pricey but a lil goes a long way.

  5. Prettykrazee says:

I have been trying to find a replacement for the KVD Tattoo Liner for awhile now. I have extremely oily eyelids so it makes it a harder to find a suitable replacement. I tried Fenty, Stila, Urban Decay, and Cover Girl. They bled all over my eyelids. I will try Nyx. I hope it works. I’m tired of looking for a replacement. I refuse to go back to KVD.

I am loving the new Hourglass Vanish Liquid Foundation. I just wore it to Star Wars Celebration and only had to blot my nose once all day. I had it on for over 12 hours and it still looked good when I got home.

    • rahrahroey says:

My favorite eyeliner ever is Hard Candy’s Stroke of Gorgeous in Little Black Dress. I honestly think it’s better than KVD Tattoo Liner. I actually think it may be a dupe for the Tattoo liner. I remember when I first used Stroke of Gorgeous and was so impressed. It stays put (and I sweat a lot) and it’s very black. Plus it’s only 5 bucks! I recommend it to everyone!

      • Prettykrazee says:

Ok! Thx for the recommendation. I will pick both up today. Hopefully one of the two will work! 🤞🏽

    • Erinn says:

Do you try using a primer before lining? Or putting down some matching shadow over the liner? That may help. I have oily lids as well, and usually that makes a difference for me.

      • Prettykrazee says:

Yes. I always try it without primer first. As I prefer to use eyeliner without primer. The Fenty and Covergirl bled the same as without primer. The Stila and Urban Decay lasted longer but still bled by the end of the day. I may have been a bit heavy handed with the Fenty and Stila as they are felt tips and I prefer brush tips. Brush tips are easier for me to use as it distributes less product. I really wanted the Stila to work as it had such great reviews. I’m excited to try these recommendations.

      • (THE OG)@Jan90067 says:

The VERY best items I’ve used is Vintner’s Daughter Elixer and Serum. They are pretty pricey, but I have noticed a VERY visible lightening of dark spots and a much better all over skin quality. I’m 62, and there is a HUGE difference in how my skin looked, even 10 yrs. ago. I think if you’re younger, you’ll see even better results. I’m a convert to these two product. You don’t need ANYTHING else, except sunscreen.

    • Minty says:

KVD is also too oily for my lids. I swear by Shu Uemera’s https://www.shuuemura.com.sg/calligraph-ink-cartridge.html

  6. Mia says:

My eyelashes are sparse so I use Loreal Voluminous Lash Paradise. I tried other mascaras but this one really works. I wear a lot of BH Cosmetics products, very affordable and nice. If anyone uses black soap on their face, I’d suggest Dudu Sun Black Soap. Your face will love you. I work in the beauty industry and every woman at the office use this soap for their face. They even ship this soap by the case to family and friends in Korea.

  7. Catherine Page says:

I have light brown skin with heavy freckling and yellow undertones. I’ve been called “hard to color match” by so many Sephora employees! So when I find a color match that I love but it’s too cakey or matte, I mix in Mac strobe cream. It makes any foundation luminous and dewy with sheer to medium coverage. Until there’s a greater range of shades (I even have to mix 2 Fenty colors!), it’s a sanity-saver for so many of my WoC friends.

    • Megan says:

I have yellow undertones and Chanel CC Cream is the only thing that matches my skin. It’s so expensive I have to keep everything else cheap, but it is worth it.

      • (THE OG)@Jan90067 says:

I used Channel CC cream, too, but they changed the formulation/colors and it doesn’t match my fair skin now 🙁

  8. Kate says:

Love Bobbi Brown foundation for my very fair colored skin. It matches perfectly – doesn’t make me white like a ghost or too pink and it’s very lightweight. It has SPF in it too. I’ve had a friend ask me what I use once b/c the tone is great. (Also recommend her lip colors for really great neutral shades)

  9. launicaangelina says:

Ooohhhh I love makeup!!! I have items I swear by. My taste is a mix of drugstore and mid- to high- end cosmetics. Celebitchy, I can dm some of my faves that I swear by. So you can consider them down for a future affiliate post.

  10. Um says:

I tried the NYX eyeliner but I find it dried out too quickly. I have a hard time getting a line on both eyelids before I have to put it down and wait a while. Maybe I got a bad one. I really like Revlon Colorstay but the applicator tip is too wide.

  11. Jen says:

I wanted to chime in with two foundation suggestions! A great BB cream (every day minimal coverage) is the Covergirl Clean Matte. It is way better coverage than you would think a BB cream has. I’m oily and this stuff stays on all day, I love it. An actual foundation I would recommend that I know is available on Amazon is Loreal 24hr Infallible, that is a recent one that just came out but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love it. It has a great color range too! Nyx also has a foundation called Can’t Stop Won’t Stop and my best friend raves about it.

    Hope this helps!! 🙂

    • Erinn says:

The Loreal 24 Hour freshwear has worked well for me. I find I have to be mindful of how I’m applying it because it has a decently quick drydown. I’m preeeettty pale – I find 405 is a hint dark for me, but I don’t think 400 would be the right shade either. I’ve been adding in a bit of my CoverFX powerplay foundation (N10) to balance it out a bit. The one thing I will say is that I HATE the scent. I probably won’t be able to use it if I feel a migraine coming because being able to smell my face drives me nuts.

  12. Clare says:

If you’re mixed race and find it hard to match foundation – Boots No 7 do a colour test in store and honestly it’s the only foundation I’ve ever used that looks ‘right’ on my skin colour. I’ve tried dozens of brands in Sephora (Fenty, makeup for ever, nars blah blah blah).

You can also get the foundation in concentrated drops that you just add to your primer/moisturiser depending on how much coverage you want. And for £16 a pop they’re pretty reasonable.

Not an ad, obviously, it’s literally the only product that looks ‘right’ on me!

  13. Anna says:

Confused about the L’Oreal mascara. You said it’s waterproof but the picture shows the non waterproof version and that is also the version your post links to.
I read up on customer reviews for the waterproof version and people are saying they are having a very hard time getting it off….

This is the waterproof version (note the little black label): https://amzn.to/2Uqh7uX

Are you saying the non-waterproof version stays on well enough to pass as “waterproof”?

  14. Bibi says:

Celebitchy, would you recommend the Mary kay foundation?

  15. Val says:

I always try to find a drugstore dupe to “high ends” products…especially considering that big firms , such as L Oreal, have bought a lot of beauty firms…and some products are made in the same factories/locations.
    Anyhow…
    My current favorites are :
    -mascara : Eyeko, Black Magic
-eyeliner : Kiko, Black Longlasting Eyeliner
    – eyeshadow : Kiko, High Pigment Wet & Dry Eyeshadow, in Champagne (neutral , brightening)
-eyepencil (for the inner eye) : Kiko, pale rose
    – blush : Kiko, Velvet Touch Creamy Stick, in Golden Sand
-illuminating drops : Bys, Pure Silk (a real bargain !)
-foundation : NYX Longlasting Foundation, in porcelain + Face Magic (by Covermark) for problematic areas (under eyes, any pimple …you get it !) but you have to powder that !
-fixing powder : Bourjois, Poudre de Riz
    – pore minimizer/primer : still using this *pricey* Benefit Pore Professional Pearl Primer
-sunscreen (always the same !) : Bioderma Fluid Sunscreen SPF 50. (not white, blends into the skin, no problem before applying foundation)
-lips : NYX Lingerie, in Bedtime Flirt

    Voilààààààààààà :-))

  16. Lila says:

Thank you for posting the eyeshadow palette! It’s got more colors I’d use than any of the palettes I’ve been waiting to go on sale (Tarte and Urban Decay), and that price point is lovely.

I like the falsies in the corner of the eye idea. I recently was supposed to wear false eyelashes for a wedding, but after getting there to get ready, we discovered none of us bridesmaids knew how to apply falsies, bride included! So they’re sitting sadly in a drawer. But a couple little ones actually sounds doable and not daunting.

  17. Anastasia says:

Remember that highly rated pore vacuum/blackhead cleaner you posted about here a while back? I bought it. The directions warn you not to use it a lot in one place or for a long time with the suction, but it was doing such a great job sucking crap out of my pores, I kept going back to the same spots, and well, I am at work today with hickies on my face.

Listen to the directions. 🙂 It’s a great product, though, thanks for the recommendation!

  18. Ms Lib says:

So I was ordering the eye shadow pallet and as Amazon does, it came up with a combination with brushes:
BS-MALL Makeup Brushes Premium Synthetic Foundation Powder Concealers Eye Shadows Makeup 14 Pcs Brush Set, Rose Golden

They have almost 4,000 reviews (4.5) so I have decided to toss all of my old brushes and start over.

    Thanks CB!

  19. Stella Alpina says:

If you are considering powder foundation for super oily skin (like mine), I recommended Cover FX Pressed Mineral Foundation. It comes in 40 shades (availability varies depending on the seller) with either neutral, pink, or golden undertones. The coverage is medium and not heavy-looking like MAC. There’s no SPF. I use a mineral sunscreen underneath from Paula’s Choice that works well as a primer for powder foundation. Cover FX isn’t cheap ($38 at Sephora) but it isn’t insanely priced like Giorgio Armani, either. And no animal testing!

Cover FX doesn’t oxidize on me like Make Up For Ever, Bare Minerals, and Kat Von D’s powder foundation. I don’t break out when I use it. I wouldn’t recommended Kat Von D because she’s problematic. MAC and Make Up For Ever give me acne. Bare Minerals clogs pores, too, and contains an ingredient (bismuth oxychloride) that irritates the skin of some people, which contradicts their claim of being gentle and natural. You certainly can’t sleep with it on, as they like to boast. BM also has heavy coverage, the shades are off, and it looks obvious in sunlight.

I can’t recommended any “long-wearing” liquid foundations designed for oily skin. My experience with those have always been negative. They don’t stay put even with setting powder and end up pooling into pores. The coverage tends to be mask-like. They look cakey by the middle of the day and are hard to wash off. So, no bueno.

    • Stella Alpina says:

Oops, wrong verb tense. I mean “recommend”.

    • Aggie says:

Cover FX is great. I plan to try the pressed powder foundation next, but right now I am using their Power Play foundation.

If you have olive undertones, look at their G+ shades! G shades are warm-toned, but the + is really olive.

  20. Liz version 700 says:

I love the eyeshadow pallet(s) so much that I discovered if you buy them a couple times Amazon sends you a coupon for a dollar off :). Does anyone have recimendstions for dark eye circles. I just got over an I’ll ess that landed me in the hospital and one of my work pals told me she can still see the dark circles under my eyes. I have such sensitive skin but yikes she is right I do look a bit sickly still….

    • Prettykrazee says:

A good concealer can work wonders for dark under eye circles. I use Tarte Shape Tape and Milani Conceal + Perfect Longwear Concealer. The Tarte coverage is great but it can be a bit drying. The Milani isn’t as drying but the coverage isn’t as full as Tarte. I don’t have sensitive skin so I don’t know how they perform on that skin type. I hope that helps.

      • Liz version 700 says:

Thanks so much! I will give them a try! I have done pretty well with tarte ptoducts.

    • ClaraBelle says:

I think I have a ton of concealer rejects as I have hereditary dark circles and have tried about every kind of drugstore brands. I finally splurged $30 on NARS product and it covers well but I it looks a bit “thick” and can look crepe-y on me. Recently I found a Rimmel compact at Big Lots for $3.00 and I like it better than NARS. The Rimmel product is called #Insta Conceal and Contour (3 shades in a compact).

I also like Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Erase. Comes in a tube with sponge applicator.

    • (THE OG)@Jan90067 says:

I have dark/red circles from allergies. The ONLY thing that covered them is Charlotte Tillsbury concealer (I use #4, and I’m pretty fair). I LOVE this. Before this, I used Channel for years, but they changed formulations and the color went “off” for me.

  21. Nikki says:

Thanks SO much, Celebitchy and posters! I need almost everything and am revamping!

  22. Lindy says:

I second the mascara recommendation! Truly waterproof and sweatproof, great volume and length, and easy to remove with eye makeup remover. Urban Decay makes a mascara called Cannonball, and if you need your mascara to never ever ever ever run or flake or smudge or smear, that’s what you should get.

Popsugar Beauty makes amazing sugar lip scrub that leaves my lips smooth and soft. And their Be the Boss lip gloss is my favorite for a tinted shine.

Benefit’s Happy foundation is my new favorite. Lightweight coverage, very blendable, and if you apply it with a big soft makeup brush (soooooo much better than a sponge), it goes on perfectly and corrects and evens out skin tone.

  23. NJMom says:

Hi So I use different foundations for different things.

For Full Coverage- I use Rihanna’s Fenty Line, have primer, concealer and foundation and bought the brushes too.
I also have Make Up Forever – For Day to Day. It says full coverage, but to me it is medium at best. I have used that for years..

Summer or Day to Day – Philosophy Tinted Moisterizer

I use different lip creams or if I really want to go out, Kyles Lip Kit. Used to use Kat Von D lipstick as well.
I find I like to switch it up every few years… use Lorac Eyeshadow Kit or Urban Decay too

  24. Minty says:

I have tried countless mascara’s (UD’s ‘Of course they’re real’, Dior, L’Oreal, NYX, etc..) and the best I’ve found so far is by “Kiko” (Italian brand) https://www.kikocosmetics.com/en-gb/p-KM0030105100044

You will have lashes for days…soft feathery long lashes for days.
