Umgeni Water board set to challenge axing by minister
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The water and sanitation minister is facing a court challenge after dissolving the Umgeni Water's board.
Mchunu dissolved the board last week and has already named an interim one.
"Unfortunately if the minister did not come to his senses in the next day or two we are going to court next week,” the ousted board's Visvin Reddy says.
“We are applying for an interdict to stop him from continuing with the destruction of an SOE which is the only one that actually works in this country."

Reddy says the minister needs to reverse what they deem to be an irrational decision to end their term.
Reddy believes Mchunu was unhappy with their choice of a new CEO.
"We have engaged with legal opinions and other experts to finalise the appointment of the CEO. Strangely enough we have not concluded that appointment and midstream have decided to terminate the board.
“The irony of the whole thing here is that he wants to fast-track the merger (between Umgeni Water and Mhlatuze Water), he puts in place an interim board of people that have zero experience in serving on a water board and he does illegally.
“There's a precedent that's already being set where a judgment has been issued previously which say that an appointment of an interim board is illegal and not part of the Water Services Act."
