TLIE Declares $4.75 million Distribution

On December 19, 2016, TLIE’s Board of Directors declared a policyholder distribution of $4.75 million.

In a recent TLIE claim, a lawyer was engaged to close a transaction. On the day before closing, the lawyer received an email from the seller asking for the funds to be wired to a different bank than originally requested. The lawyer complied with the request, but the seller later complained he had not received the money, and that he had not sent the email with new wiring instructions. A jury found the lawyer 100% liable for the loss of the funds..

When a lawyer moves from one law firm to another, the lawyer is required to keep confidences learned at the prior firm. Texas law has been at odds with other states and decisions in federal courts by not permitting screening of lateral hire lawyers in most circumstances.

Receiving a letter from the State Bar of Texas notifying you that a grievance has been filed against you can be upsetting and daunting. Consider the following as soon as you receive a letter from the State Bar, because you must respond within 30 days.
