Deputies: Gun stolen in spree of car break-ins near Disney World

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County deputies are trying to figure out who was behind a rash of car break-ins in the tourist corridor this week.

Deputies said the thieves targeted 25 cars at several hotels on Palm Parkway near Disney World.

The stolen valuables included a gun, deputies said.

“What they’re getting isn’t great, but they did get a gun, change, sunglasses. Anything they can get,” said Jane Watrel, of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

The burglars smashed the windows of the cars unless the vehicles were unlocked.

Deputies said the thieves would first check for any valuables that were in plain sight.

In the tourist area hotels near the theme park, there are signs warning drivers to park at their own risk and to not leave valuables in their cars.

Deputies said the thieves hit car after car late Monday night, possibly into Tuesday morning at four hotels.

Deputies said they are looking through surveillance videos and following up on some leads.

The Sheriff’s Office said it has extra patrols and special operations going on to battle this type of crime in the tourist area, but reminds the public that the best way to protect your valuables is to not leave them in a car.
