USA MEN’S GOLF RECEIVES EIGHTH STRAIGHT GCAA TEAM AWARD

2016 GCAA Team Academic Awards

NORMAN, Okla. – For the eighth consecutive season, the University of South Alabama men's golf program has earned All-Academic Team recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America, the organization announced Wednesday.

Nine Jaguars combined to record a cumulative 3.42 grade-point average during the 2015-16 academic year, with six individuals posting a mark of 3.20 or better.

Stephen Wall — who sat out the campaign as a redshirt — paced the team with a 3.97 GPA last year, while Matt Sheehan had a 3.56 grade-point average during the fall and spring semesters.  The remaining quartet at or above a 3.20 included Daniel Jansen, a 2015-16 GCAA Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar, Jason Mendel, Ryan Pope and Peter Staalbo.

Jansen and Pope earned their undergraduate degrees from USA in May, while Staalbo — in his first semester at the collegiate level — posted five top-20 finishes while earning an at-large berth as an individual to the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional.

The Jaguars rallied on the final day of stroke play at the Sun Belt Conference Championship to advance to the semifinals of the match play segment of the tournament.

A college or university must submit the grade-point averages for each player on its official squad list for the academic year to be eligible to be chosen an All-Academic Team by the association.
