TRENTON - A Sunday afternoon drive-by shooting along Martin Luther King Boulevard left two city men wounded and one of them under arrest when he was charged with possession of marijuana, police said today.
Naquian Davis, 21, was at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Beakes Street around 5:25 p.m. yesterday. With him was an 18-year-old whose name police did not release.
Davis and the teen later told police a black SUV with at least one male inside wearing a black face mask pulled up and they heard six or seven shots, said Lt. Mark Kieffer, a police spokesman.
"We don't know if he was targeted or not," Kieffer said of Davis.
Davis was shot in the right knee and the 18-year-old in the left ankle as they scrambled to escape the gunfire, police said. They were driven to nearby Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where they sought treatment.
Police who went to interview them there allegedly found six baggies of marijuana on Davis' person, and he was charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams. There was no contraband on the 18-year-old and no charges will be filed against him, Kieffer said.
No return gunfire was reported during the drive-by shooting, according to Kieffer. The intersection has seen repeated shootings and gunfights over the years, including one last Memorial Day weekend captured on surveillance video that left two wounded.
In 2011, Davis was allegedly one of two men involved in an early-morning burglary attempt at the D and A Deli on Calhoun Street in Ewing near the Trenton border. In the armed deli owner’s attempt to repel them, the man ended up mistakenly trading gunfire with an off-duty Trenton police officer. No one was hurt.
