Hidden Falls E-book Out June 8th
While we've made a few changes to upcoming pub dates, we've decided to move forward and release the e-book version of Hidden Falls–a new literary fiction novel by Kevin Myers–one month early! Now, on June 8th, readers can dive into New England’s dangerous underworld and join Michael Flynn, a middle-aged, romantically unattached editorial writer at the Portland Daily, as he becomes the unwitting linchpin in a major criminal conspiracy. As Judd Apatow, writer and director of The 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, writes of Hidden Falls: "Hidden Falls is as if Dennis Lehane wrote the 40-Year Old Virgin. It's intelligent, charming, and the perfect combination of thrilling and funny. It's a must-read!" Pre-order your e-book copy now to start reading on June 8th!

Shelter-in-Place Tips from the
Beaufort Team
Like much of the country, we're heading into the seventh week of coronavirus-related lockdown orders. This month, instead of highlighting our current reads, we wanted to highlight how our team has been dealing with the lockdown and a few tips we've learned along the way.

How are you dealing with sheltering-in-place?
How have you been spending your time?
Any useful shelter-in-place tips you'd like to share?

Eric:
  • I have not been in the New York office since March 10th. Between the 11th and 17th I was in Iceland and since the 17th in Riverside CT working every day with Megan by phone and email. It all is working better than I could have imagined. Plus I have been hiking every day in a hilly, forest park. It is amazing to finally experience Spring erupt before my eyes.
  • I have been recording podcasts with Chuck Davis. We have now recorded about 1,100 daily podcasts and have just finished the most recent series. I read daily, hike daily, and Netflix nightly, but limit the time to reasonable levels. Up in the morning about 6 AM and to bed at 11:30 PM. Life these days in much busier than I thought it would be.
  • I don't know what "shelter in place" actually means. It is not good to stay put indoors so I get out to either walk in the neighborhood or in the forest. I have not been arrested so I will keep at it.
Megan T.:
  • The first few weeks were the hardest, but I have found a routine that seems to be working well. The hardest part is living in a small NYC apartment-there isn't a lot of room for all my work from home stuff!
  • The first month and a half I found myself watching more TV (lots of true crime stuff and documentaries on Netflix). I haven't been able to focus on reading much; I have started numerous books but my attention span seems shot at the moment. This weekend I started a new cross-stitch (one of my hobbies) and that is helping make everything seem a little more normal.
  • For tips; having a routine is key. And if you are working from home, finding a way to keep your work/life balance is a must. Even though it is a little more work, every evening when I shut down my computer, I also move it away from where I will be relaxing (remember-small apartment, so no official desk). I am also trying to keep my normal hours, as if I were in the office. I never realized how much my daily commute helped me either prep for work or give me a transition time to get ready to relax at home. So weather permitting, I take a walk each evening. I may start adding a walk in the morning as well-that will help me catch up on all the podcasts that are piling up!
Olivia:
  • I am fortunate in that I have been spending this crazy time with family in Oklahoma, where there are significantly more trees (and fluffy dogs) I can enjoy. As a complete introvert and homebody, sheltering-in-place hasn't been too difficult for me, but it has truly made me look forward to the time when we can socialize in person again!
  • Lots of books, crafts, board games, and puzzles, as well as any random home workouts I can find on YouTube.
  • For me, making a point of going to bed and waking up early has been essential.  Though this is a common recommendation, I've also found that meditating every day has helped me stay as productive and low-stress as possible.
Thank You to Our Spring Interns
Here at Beaufort, our interns are invaluable members of our team that help us stay productive (and sane!) throughout the year. If you've ever read our blog, engaged with us on social media, or received an ARC of one of our titles, it's likely that you've interacted with one of the many things that make up their ever-evolving to-do lists. Our spring interns, David Beauie and Charlotte Beaurontë, have been especially helpful this semester as we've tried to adjust to this new normal. Though we wish we could have provided a normal office experience over the past few months, we are forever grateful to them for being so helpful and flexible during this unprecedented time!

"You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming."

–Pablo Neruda
