The new Hyundai Sonata has joined the Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Sport as one of the safest vehicles on the road, according to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), who awarded the car with its 2018 Top Safety Pick+ rating. The Sonata is equipped with the optional Automatic Emergency Braking and LED headlights with Dynamic Bending Lights. These are available on new cars built after September 2017.

The director of product planning for Hyundai North America, Scott Margason said, "the innovations we are implementing for crash protection and prevention have all positively enhanced the safety of our products." The new Sonata comes with Blind Spot Detection (BSD) and Rear Cross-traffic Alert (RCTA) as standard. It also gets a new Lane Departure Warning System with Lane Keep Assist function. Along with these three cars, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, Elantra, Elantra GT, Sonata and the Tucson received the 2018 Top Safety Pick award.

To get the Top Safety Pick award, the cars must get good ratings in five IIHS crashworthiness tests. These are the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. Additionally, they should also have an advanced rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable headlight rating. For the Top Safety Pick+ award, the cars should have a good rating in passenger-side small overlap front tests and an improved headlight rating. The features that helped the Hyundai car get the high safety rating are optional front-crash prevention, headlights and their performance on the IIHS test tracks.
