Kickstarter has confirmed that it was the victim of a security breach earlier in the week.

The crowdfunding website announced in a statement that data including email addresses, phone numbers, usernames and encrypted passwords were stolen during the breach.

Law enforcement officials informed Kickstarter of the incident on Wednesday (February 12), and the company said that it acted quickly to close the breach.

The Kickstarter statement also stressed that "no credit card data of any kind" was accessed by the hackers, but did not specify how the cyber attack occurred.

Kickstarter is advising all users to change their password for all accounts where the same password was used.

Yancey Strickler - the Kickstarter CEO - apologized for the incident in a letter to the public.

Kickstarter wrote: "We're incredibly sorry that this happened. We set a very high bar for how we serve our community, and this incident is frustrating and upsetting.

"We have since improved our security procedures and systems in numerous ways, and we will continue to do so in the weeks and months to come."
