LeRoy Clarke has died.
The Master Artist, author and poet passed away at his home The Legacy House in Cascade this morning around 6 o'clock.
Relatives confirmed his death to Loop News. They said he was ailing prior to his death.
Clarke was 82.
Born in Belmont on November 7, 1938, Clarke was the first artist in Trinidad and Tobago to be conferred with the title Master Artist by the National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago.
A former teacher and lead singer of the group The Beamers, Clarke was an author of several books and was involved in the Trinidad Theatre Workshop as a set designer.
Throughout his prolific career, he earned many awards and accolades, among them an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Trinidad and Tobago, National Living Treasure from the Trinidad Hilton and declared a national icon by the government.
In 2005, Clarke was bestowed with the Staff of Eldership and Chieftaincy title at the sixth Shango/Oshun Rain Festival.
