TEENAGE
Based on the groundbreaking book by the punk author Jon Savage and narrated by actors Jena Malone, Ben Whishaw, Julia Hummer and Jessie Usher, Teenage is a compelling collage from director Matt Wolf (Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell), crafted from archival material, Super-8 recreations and diaries of actual mid-century teenagers, all set to a post-punk contemporary soundtrack. The result is an unconventional pop historical film about the birth of the iconic, eternally cool figure of the teenager. -KJ

See humans learn to communicate at the dawn of time, an overture brought to life in inky black and white, and a man get his first (of many) colonoscopies, all rendered one frame at a time. -JW

Blue Ruin
Murder Party’s Jeremy Saulnier returns to the director’s chair after a six-year absence to bring us this Cannes-winning tale of rural revenge. Macon Blair stars as Dwight, a beach hobo still shell shocked from the murder of his parents years ago. When he hears that the man accused of killing them is being released from prison, Dwight heads back to his old haunts to give the killer a blood-soaked homecoming. “Blue Ruin may occasionally be midnight-movie lurid, but not at the expense of deeper questions about vengeance’s diminishing returns.” (Tim Grierson, Paste Magazine) -KJ
