We here at MathNook hope you have a great Valentine's Day.  Jan and I will probably celebrate the following week when I have some time off and the restaurants aren't so hectic.

Well as promised last month we've got lots of new material and new things coming up.  We are kind of surprised at how much progress we've already made this month.  Usually we run into problems that slow us up some but not this time.  We are keeping our fingers crossed though.

As we write this, we have about three quarters of all of our math games aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and should hopefully have all of them done by Valentine's Day.  You'll find the CCSS number/numbers associated with a game listed right below the game's title as shown in the picture below.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) numbers are in red

We also now have 3 ways to find the games and other materials on our sites:  by searching, by math skill category, and by Common Core Standard number.  The Skill Category Scroller has been on our site for a while, but the Common Core State Standard Scroller is new and the search function is improved.  Click on the links in the scrollers to see the games by category or CCSS number.  The scrollers scroll on their own but you can use the arrow icons to "fast-forward" or "rewind" through the display of links if you like.

Improved search at top, Category Scroller center and Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Scroller at bottom

Stay tuned for more improvements and material.
Until next month,
Tommy and Jan

Famous Female Mathematicians
Famous Female Mathematicians
It is a well-established fact that the future of careers in this country will come largely from those in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field.  But, unfortunately, females are finding themselves shut out of these careers because of the stereotype that young girls don't "do" math.

Here are some examples of famous women throughout history who have overcome this stereotype and made a difference in the field of mathematics.

Tips for Teaching Fractions

When teaching math, it's important to show how the subject relates to a child's world. By using numbers in context, you can help a child make sense of what he or she is seeing. Without understanding the meaning of numbers, it can be difficult for children to properly employ problem solving strategies.

When dealing with fractions, the best way to provide conceptual knowledge is to draw on a child's experience. Unfortunately, because they are so young, kids have limited experience. Still, you can use plenty of familiar, everyday concepts to make fractions seem less daunting.
