Happy New Year! No, you’re not reading a post from a month ago, today is the start of the Chinese New Year.

2014 is the year of the horse and to celebrate Dublin Chinese New Year Festival (DCNYF) was launched at an opening ceremony at Hugh Lane’s Dublin City Gallery at yesterday evening.

The Festival will run from January 31st to February 14th, with events held at venues across the city, several of which are free.

Speaking about DCNYF, the Lord Mayor said “The Festival is a celebration of the very strong Chinese culture and community here in Dublin and showcases art, history, music, dance and cuisine in a wide range of events.”

On Sunday, Temple Bar’s Meeting House Square will play host to the Chinese New Year Carnival, from 12 noon to 5pm. Visitors will be exposed to various aspects of Chinese culture including traditional musical performances, martial arts display and a selection of Chinese cooking.

Dublin city libraries will hold workshops to help children learn about Chinese culture.
