MU Doctoral Student Receives Two Scholarships

Scholarships Net Doctoral Student $5,000!

Amanda Musser had a great spring semester at Millersville University; receiving two scholarships; one from The Roothbert Fund and one from The Simon Cancer Foundation.

As a grant that awards undergraduate and graduate students in the U.S. a stipend to continue their college education, The Roothbert Fund was founded in 1958 in memory of German emigrants Albert and Toni Roothbert.

Musser, a first-year doctoral student in social work at Millersville was awarded $4,000 from the Roothbert Fund to aid in the completion of her graduate studies. Founded on the principle of creating a “new, more enlightened society,” The Roothbert Fund focuses on awarding students whose daily actions appear to be prompted by spiritual motives.

“As a cancer survivor myself, I genuinely feel that I was meant to be working and contributing to the specialty field of oncology social work. It was fate. The board recognized my passion to improve and support the lives of cancer survivors and the award is such an honor,” said Musser.

Recipients of the fund are called Roothbert Fellows and are brought together to meet like-minded intellects and spiritual individuals through an informal retreat and gatherings at Pendle Hill, a Quaker study center outside of Philadelphia.

Focused on the idea of advanced educational research and findings, Musser’s grant will aid in her studies of the risk and treatment of PTSD in pediatric cancer survivors and will also fund additional educational opportunities for other students to participate in her oncology social work studies.

“After finishing my doctorate I would like to teach courses specific to medical social work and continue research on cancer survivors and trauma,” says Musser. “I hope to be able to be published in an academic journal at some point.”

In addition, Musser received a $1,000 scholarship as the 2019 recipient of the Harvey Simon Memorial Scholarship from The Simon Cancer Foundation. She is one of only five recipients of the award.  The foundation was created in honor of Harvey Simon and his struggle with cancer.  It assists cancer patients by awarding scholarships and making charitable donations to camps and educational programs.
