Linear career paths rarely exist. LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky says that for the past 15 years, one of the most-requested features on LinkedIn was a tool that could show members what a typical career path looks like for a given role. “It turns out the data tells us nothing because there truly is no linear career path," he says. “I think it’s helped a lot of people understand that first and foremost, you have to put your career in your own hands.” How have you taken charge of your career? Let us know in the comments. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Mandy Cohen's message to managers: “Managers can be the most influential people in someone’s mental health journey.” The most important thing managers can do, Cohen told LinkedIn News at the Milken Institute Global Conference, is to “be curious” and look for “changes in behavior.” Some examples: ☑ Withdrawing from meetings ☑ Not participating as much ☑ Missing deadlines ☑ Seeming distracted “It doesn’t necessarily mean a mental health challenge,” Cohen said. "But it’s a reason to be curious to say, 'Hey, something going on?'” Does your manager care about your mental health? What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made starting a new job? 😭 David Ko, CEO of Calm, says one of the biggest mistakes a leader can make when starting a new job is making change right away instead of listening. “So many times, leaders come in and feel like, “I'm going to make change right away. I have all these thoughts,” Ko told LinkedIn News at the Milken Institute Global Conference. Don’t make this mistake. “Temper your own intuition about making change right away,” he said. Instead, *listen.* “That part often gets lost. They say they’re going to listen, but they don't actually listen. They may listen for a day. They may listen for a week…” Ko said, “Take the first 30 days to just listen.” Share the biggest mistake you’ve made starting a new job in the comments. #MIGlobal

Your inner circle is 🔑 When the pandemic hit, 3x Grammy-Winning Bass-Baritone Ryan Speedo Green found himself suddenly out of work, too anxious to sing, and at a loss for what to do next. Now, he’s a leading star at the Met Opera. He says the support of his inner circle was key. “The closest person to me in my inner circle, my wife, gave me better advice than anyone in my field could have given me…because she knew me and had my best interests at heart,” he says. “As much as it’s awesome to be celebrated, when you’ve hit your low points…having someone to talk to about it is even more important.” Do you feel supported by your inner circle? Let us know in the comments. Watch Speedo Green's episode of #Catalyst: https://lnkd.in/gzQvvaxf

“We develop plans to reduce our anxiety about the future, but the truth is that life's a random walk, and I think you just have to be willing to deal with it.” Bob Pittman does not believe in plans. From launching MTV and Nick at Nite, to leading AOL’s explosive growth, to his current role helming iHeartMedia, his success can largely be attributed to relentless curiosity and a willingness to move fast and learn on the fly. In one of my favorite episodes of This is Working (lnkd.in/tiw), Bob elaborated on what has guided his key career decisions. “How could I even have planned for cable networks because they didn't exist?" he said. "How could I plan to have a career in the internet because it didn't exist? It’s just this idea of, ‘This sounds like an interesting way to spend my time.’” We’re revisiting my conversation with Bob this week, as he offered such great insights and actionable advice that cuts across any industry or career level.
