Malta International Airport History

Malta International Airport is based on the site of the original British military airport, RAF Luqa (which is why the airport is still known at Luqa Airport by many locals today).

RAF Luqa’s passenger terminal was originally developed in the 1950s, financed by the British Government, to handle the increasing number of civilian aircraft flight traffic to Malta after the Second World War.

In 1977 a new, longer runway was launched and other changes made in the terminal, to reflect the growing interest in the island as a leisure destination, and to accommodate larger jet airliners.

After the change of Government in 1987, the construction of a new air terminal took place and Malta International Airport became fully operational in February 1992.

Your views on Malta International Airport

“I love this airport approach due to the amazing scenery one may see. On approach, you can see not only Malta, but its sister islands (Gozo and Comino) too. Add the sunset to that scenario and the result is just magic.”

“An amazing holistic view of the Maltese Islands is breathtaking. The blue sea, dispersed boats, fortifications and harbours are an exceptional view which can be highly difficult to beat!”

“While up in the sky, over the clear blue Mediterranean, you come across the fantastic small island of Malta, with its beautiful medieval city of Mdina, the wonderful harbour of Valetta, and its unique architecture everywhere, you know you are HOME.”
