The Shongololo's first new getaway, to Maputo, makes its debut on February 5 when holidaymakers can experience the pleasure of rail travel and the tropical beauty of Mozambique.

The journey begins at Brightwater Common (formerly Randburg Waterfront) from where guests will be transported to the Shongololo platform. The train stops at the border post of Ressano Garcia for the night.

The next morning, guests may choose to remain on board for a trip to Maputo, or transfer to air-conditioned Mercedes Sprinters.

Maputo is worth seeing. Once a magical holiday destination (it was then the glamorous Lourenco Marques), the city has certainly not lost its flair for hospitality.

A ferry will take guests to Catembe, where they can relax on the beach and take an afternoon stroll along the shore.

The cost per person sharing starts from R1 000 per day.
