“If they ever find you…run.”

Imagine your mother saying this to you every day until she died. Imagine she never explained the reasoning behind it or who they were; just ground it into your head from infancy. You’d probably be a little paranoid, wouldn’t you?

Now imagine that one day you’re standing in line at the grocery store and out of nowhere every single nerve ending in your body starts firing, all of them screaming at you to run as adrenaline floods your veins. You can feel the danger pressing in around you and without knowing how or why, you suddenly understand every dire warning your mother ever whispered. You understand on a primeval level.

Welcome to the opening of this book. It had me from page one.

Geissinger builds a beautiful world upon truly unique shifter lore. The story centers around an ancient tribe born out of the dense jungles of Africa in a time before humans kept histories. Over the millennia they’ve migrated from their home country in an effort to remain within the shadows, to find those vast tracts of unpopulated land best suited to helping them keep their secrets. They’re the Ilkati, a fierce, warrior-like people able to shift into the form of panthers, or if they’re really powerful, mist.

Our female lead, Jenna, is a half-blood, with a human mother and a terribly powerful Ilkati father. Their love was a forbidden one and so to keep his wife and daughter alive, her father had to turn himself over to face his people’s punishments for his crime. It’s from his disappearance that her mother’s paranoia springs and really, who can blame her?

Me, that’s who.

She protects her daughter the one way she knows how, by teaching her how to hide, to never let anyone get too close, to never give her trust. I want to slap that woman.

If we take the nurture approach to Jenna’s behavior, then all my issues with her can be blamed on her mother and her never ending warnings. I understand why she acted the way she did throughout the book, I really do. But the thing is, I didn’t like it. She was stubborn to the point of stupidity, infuriatingly irrational, and her propensity for making false assumptions was slightly enraging to say the least. Just when I thought “Finally, she’s coming around”, her mother’s words would rear their ugly head and Jenna would take another two steps back.

Leander, the male love interest and Alpha to the English sect of the Ilkati, has the patience of a saint. After discovering Jenna and bringing her to live amongst their people, he begins to pursue her, drawn to her fiery temperament and her stubbornness like a moth to a flame. You know that age old adage about how men like a challenge? How they live for the chase? Yeah. That.

If Jenna had become rational a little sooner, this book would have easily been four stars for me. I love Geissinger’s writing, I really do. There are so many beautiful passages in this book, so many incredible descriptions. And that chemistry. Good God does Geissinger write good sex. Pair all this with an MC I can really get behind and I’ll give her work five stars every time. Just look at my rating for the third book in this series!

Okay, so what kept this a three were my own innumerable pet peeves, my difficulties accepting certain personality flaws. And so I encourage others to pick up this book, to give this series a chance. The writing and the world building definitely make it worth it and if you have less literary pet peeves than I do, I think you’ll absolutely love it.

4 Decent Stars

I was really hesitant in reading this book because of all the poor reviews, but some of the bloggers in the community mentioned this author was good. Also, the AUDIO book was free on Kindle Unlimited so I thought why not?

Here’s the thing, some books on audio are way better on audio verse standard reading. For example, I HATE HATE HATE descriptive books with a lot of inner monologue, BUT I don’t mind it in audio format. I also hate lengthy, wordy and draggy books, BUT I don’t mind it in audio format.

I think my tastes are different in audio format, because I’m at working doing work stuff and I kind of half pay attention to the book. If it’s a super slow book then it works out in my favor because I can follow it along easier.

I’ll be honest and say I don’t really remember much out of this book. I do know the Heroine was confused about herself, which I like in a paranormal book and the Hero was kind of alpha and English which are all pluses in my book.

The narrator wasn’t that great I should say. Her regular voice was fine and even her Heroine voice was tolerable, but her Hero voice was horrific. He sounds like a pansy (voice wise). I think she over acted a bit too much on the Hero / male voices. BUT I continued with the book because I was interested in the story and I liked the accent, the narrator at least got that right.

I’m not sure if I agree with the other reviews. Was this book wordy? I dunno, maybe? Because it was in audio format I couldn’t tell.

Did the Hero and Heroine fight too much? Maybe. I do remember a constant tug and pull between the two. Usually I don’t like angst in books, but it wasn’t so bad.

Overall, I liked the book and I will be moving on with the series

Borne and originated from the wilds of Africa came the Ikati; ancient, deadly feline predators, shadowed, persecuted and hunted into hiding. They’ve since formulated and now live by their respective strict, cardinal law - laws which can’t be breached - which means a life of preservation and protection has led them and spread them around the world to form secretive colonies organised by leaders, Alphas and Assembly members.

With controlled choices these warriors of strength and power run a society of law and savage punishment, and as a result very earthborn injustice and captivity cloaked as shelter. Gray oppressive limitations of a life lived in hiding. Nil freedom and consequences many.

When the Assembly inform the Alpha of Sommerley of a Half-blood traipsing out in the open, a potential danger to their kind and therefore potentially problematic, Leander sets out to see how much of a threat this Half-Blood poses, or whether she poses one at all, but he doesn’t account for her threatening his choices, or her sumptuous call to his fundamental animal.

Preservation. Preservation. Preservation is the language Jenna Moore speaks. She should know, with a childhood spent in the throes of flurrying movement that led to a series of unanswered questions has thus carved Jenna Moore down to the bare bones of stubborn hardiness and potent paranoia. As a child born of revolt, defiance and broken law, this willful, dogged daughter of both a leader and a traitor finds herself wedged between a past of intentional mystery and a present that brings back an austere message echoed through memory…if they find you…run.

With the whispering restless doubts of suspicion trailing her lithe footsteps, paranoia is both her only inheritance from parents long-gone as well as a lifestyle of wakeful awareness. With an acute sentience of her divergent singularity and unique abilities, Jenna was granted a life of freedom yielded through sacrifice. But when she faces the ones who have haunted her life, the mystery of her father and every day since, she’s thrown headlong between choices and answers that sting with the pain of truth so peculiar and apparent that Jenna may have to use her stony heart to wrap the cold of day and the ice of winter in thick layers around her, while the possibility of Leander’s love can’t be the one to thaw years of frigidity.

Shadow’s Edge was written in 2012 and stands as the author’s debut. Geissinger has since released other books in the Night Prowler Series told from different character perspectives. While this book is an urban fantasy, the paranormal romance element is the prevailing ingredient in this story of discovering love and companionship - a fast burn romance which takes the route of a slow burn because of Jenna’s incredibly cautious disposition.

Seized from the start, this book is scripted with a beautiful narrative that spins this story from threads of melodious description. I was excited and hoped that this would be a story of equal parts romance and plot, and while there was a distinct plot detailing the threats to the Ikati, including the regression of an age-old lifestyle, the story mostly and dominantly focused on Jenna, Leander and their romance. I personally love any source of romantic entanglement in my stories so long as it’s integrated well with selective devices…but I did find myself thinking ‘smashing fundament for a story, but perhaps hidden by a much too potent romance?’ But then again, the author dedicates this book to finding true love, so this might have been the direct intention. I suppose I just wanted more plot excitement.

The story finishes with Ikati secrets in the hands of the enemy - and their lifestyle threatened - with war on the very near horizon for their kind and their enemies. This can be read as a standalone and promises an end to Leander and Jenna’s love story, but the series continues with other character perspectives which I assume will roll forward with the suspended plot.

What we witness in this story by way of the main leads, as well the side characters - who I felt a lot of sympathy for - is how action is motivated by a lack of self-rule, inaction or the desire for something fundamental in human nature - the longing to be free with autonomous choice. What remains to happen then when intent and yearning, hunger and thirst propel instinct. With the shackles of ancient patriarchal law, and freedoms neglected, of a crippled justice system that calls freedom of choice a traitor’s instinct, can love ever really be a crime meriting penalty; can law-breaking in the name of love and freedom ever be worthy of punishment.

Things I liked:
1)Great footing for a story with the Ikati heritage, lore and ancient history. This tied in nicely with Jenna’s own story.
2)The writing has a beautifully graceful and aesthetic touch with vivid descriptions that lent memorable details to character emotions explored and the descriptions in general.
3)Really well done sex scenes *thumbs up*

Some concerns:
1)Once Jenna was brought to Sommerley to Leander’s colony I actually thought we were going to see how the whole population live, specific Gifts from individual members and hordes of different shifters shifting, exhibiting abilities and integrating, along with Jenna exploring her own Gifts in more detail. I didn’t realise that Jenna would spend most of her time - perhaps not her fault because of the Assembly’s mistrust - in Leander’s mansion. For example I loved the scene when she shifts to panther for the first time, maybe we could have had more of that. Some battle scenes would have made me a very happy lady too - in human form and shifter form to provide some conflict. I wanted to see more of the Ikati; Jenna meeting more of them.
2)Although i loved the lyrical descriptions as this type of writing fits snugly with personal tastes, at times, the prose was unnecessarily protracted when I just wanted focus on the ploys and plays.
3)Ultimately I thought this was a wonderful debut for fantasy and I did enjoy the book, but there was something indefinable that held me at bay. Perhaps I wanted more from the story? Maybe a few more bits of shading and tinting to really fill some undervalued areas?
4)I liked the first half much more than the second half of the book. With the understanding, in the beginning, that a romance is absolutely going to be brewing, I thought that once the gang arrived back at their colony the focus would refocus on more happening aside from the romance. That being said, this was enjoyable.
5)Jenna - though understandably - was a tad too stubborn, but what with Leander maintaining a great deal of patience I think everything worked out well in the end. Leander is an Alpha, but he’s a thoughtful, patient and attentive alpha.

Trigger Warning: A few descriptive sex scenes and a scene of gory torture.

Pretty good. Different. I liked the heroine. I'm not sure if the same couple will be in the next book in this series or not, which would change my opinion of this book. If they're not, then I'm disappointed in the heroine for not being more powerful, if they are, then this is a good start. I do think at times this book was overly long and the flashbacks could've been shorter, but it didn't bore me. I liked the world building and the ikati and hope the heroine shakes their world up more if she's in book 2.

When I asked for paranormal romance recommendations (and I'm always asking for them), Shadow's Edge came up a few times so I knew I had to add it to my list. I am so glad I finally got the chance to read it!

This book had so much of what I look for in a great story:
🐾 intense and dynamic characters — and I mean ALL of them!
🐾 compelling plot — I love when I can't predict exactly where the story is going to go. Who's friend and who is foe?
🐾 insane chemistry — I'm telling you, the tension that burned between Leander and Jenna was immense. It practically leaped off of the pages!
🐾 no unnecessary drama — only necessary dramatics, although the heroine came this close to getting on my nerves
🐾 a happy for now ending — the underlying plot isn't over so I'm sure more of this couple will be shown as the series goes (hopefully)

Leander was the brooding, gorgeous and fierce Alpha of the Ikati. He ruled, protected, and carried the heaviest of burdens. When it becomes clear that a half blood is approaching their 25th birthday, a day when their gifts either present themselves or don't, it's up to him to impose punishment. In his world, half breeds are an abomination and should be put to death. Will he be able to carry out this judgment?

Never calling any one place 'home', Jenna has become accustomed to spending her whole life bouncing from one place to the next, never understanding why she and her family couldn't stay still. She always knew she was different and after her father's mysterious disappearance, she was told to hide how special she was. She only knew that if 'they' found her, she was to disappear. However, when Leander comes into her life, she has to choose between fight or flight. Does she continue to hide or does she find the courage to face what she's unknowingly avoided her whole life?

I enjoyed the push and pull of the relationship that developed between Leander and Jenna. There was no easy road for them, but the author didn't make it impossible. Instead, we were given strong people who had to learn to adapt - to a new world, to a new truth, to each other. It was obvious that they were meant to be... the author just made them work for it. I could have easily done without Christian's feelings, which took away from how much I enjoyed getting to know his character, but I'm guessing this is something that will get worked out in another book. Overall, a solid and well-written read and I will definitely be checking out the next book of the series.

Writing Style

description

Overly delineative...

She chose a soda because there wasn't any milk - whole milk - her second favorite food to steak.

...it was a fitted charcoal grey pinstripe and had the look of absurdly expensive bespoke. He wore beneath a snowy white button-down shirt, open at the collar to reveal a hing of tawny skin at his throat.

Aside from that last sentence not even being a damn grammatically correct sentence, the adjectives whispered very softly that they'd like me to help them go on strike!!!

Almost EVERY sentence is over-written with too much superfluous information and/or too many adjectives.

The writing is often flowery, both literally and figuratively; highly imaginative; and whimsical like a fairy dust sprinkling.

Now, this is bad for the connective sentences & their flow, which are only supposed to give basic info or thought around the main plot points.

description

^ Three pages on having a simple glass of wine... followed by another muti-page description on how she landed a job in wine... followed by what I can only call a wine orgy, for example, is overkill, boring, and ultimately stifles the flow of this book to HONEY rolling off a polar bear's ass. IDGAF about wine; I'm reading a para romance, not a wine and cheese magazine.

However, I'll say that the author's highly imaginative descriptor-style serves the reader well in other incidences, especially the para elements, that need details for the reader to experience things as the characters experience them. Leander's first shift into vapor, for example, truly needed such a vivid description.

So, the writer needs to learn balance and realize that not EVERY sentence is meant to be sprinkled with fairy dust & drowned in description. Less can be more!

Did A Box Of Crayons & A Jar Of
Honey Jump In The Author's Keyboard?

There's some kind of OCD here with flowers, color, & honey.

description

I can't even begin to count how many types of f'ing flowers are mentioned and how many times something is compared to a flower.

Everything from the linoleum at a grocery store to leather gets a detailed a color description. I shit you not!

There's also a honey obsession; there's everything from "honeyed warmth" to "honey-blonde hair" to "honey-bronzed skin" in the span of 10%.

description

The whole color thing is so impressively WTF that I felt it necessary to chronicle just a few from about 20% of the book.

•dove-gray leather
•slate-gray sky
•walls painted smoky plum
•snowy white button
•ginger-haired woman
•beige linoleum floor
•silver tray of flatbread
•interesting shade of eggplant
•lashes long and black as soot
•wrinkled black apron
•mottled shade of crimson
•a flush of scarlet
•platinum gold Jimmy Choo pump
•golden locks
•black-and-white tiled floor
•ivory skin
•white linen tablecloth
•white marble floor
•dark and rich ruby
•candlelight glowed amber and (you guessed it) honey.
•plush butter cream carpet
•the sky above them smoke and ebony-blue
•gray plume of mist
•sun slanted saffron and gold
•black against plush caramel cheeks
•silvery tears
•smoke-purple mountains
•threw sparks of blue off his black hair
•fitted beige trousers

Someone left the crayons out, perhaps?

At Least Give Me The Good Cheese!

description

EVERYONE here is lithe, sleek, and graceful and has twany skin, and at least one honey colored feature. *facepalm* *eyeroll* *Kindle shake*

I don't see how these mfers have a single layer of subcutaneous tissue left as often as their "skin prickles."

"... the poem of her face.

^ Good Lawd!

I could go on, but I'm just tired, really, really, tired~

Are You Serious?

An exotic sylph with elegance and strength and solid luster, all feminine curves and opalescent skin and a surfeit of raw power simmering beneath.

^ That is how the male MC describes the female MC DIRECTLY after she has a freakout panic attack, sees him for the first time, and immediately passes the fuck out in middle of a grocery store.

So, was his description supposed to be funny? Seriously, was it? I laughed!

Speaking of descriptions, he calls her ass a "regal carriage."

Again, was this intended to induce laughing?

Is The Female MC Bipolar?

So, weird shit is happening from page one of the book. Her sensory gifts go haywire around some dude at the grocery store. Her shit is moved around in her house. She goes all 'electric' when near grocery store dude, who's now shown up at her work. He has super hearing. .... Yet, our girl is all totally like no way!!; I think I'll ignore this shit and put it to the back of my mind in the "file important shit here to rot" slot & just be unreasonably bitchy and completely unprofessional to the guy.

I'm honestly unsure if she's going to twirl her honey-blonde hair and pop a pretty pink perfectly round bubblegum bubble as she asks him if he's a big, mean, tanned, lithe, graceful, handsome bad guy -OR- call him a dick and stab him in his beautifully green like sea mist blowing toward a brilliantly blue sky eye with a silver and slightly curved wine cork.

Then, she shows up at this dude's hotel, out of no damn where with all fear gone, and acts like she's the damn Queen of Ice there to make demands of the "it(s)" she was repeatedly told all her life to run from. Wtf? Are you TSTL?

Plot

@ 33%, I don't even know what the plot is here other than get her ass back to some uber secret para community that seems more like a KooKooLaid factory than para community.

So, the actual "what" they are is a nifty concept - panther shifts, mist shifts, sensory and physical upgrades. I like that this isn't the usual suspect para category. The hierarchy setup is kind of "Twillight"ish spin on the typical wolfie setup of alpha males & females.

The problem...

All talk! I'm bored of the crayon box slapped by a thesaurus. I'm tired of monologues on food, wine, and the decor. I'm tired of reading 30 words to convey a simple five word thought.

description

I'm f'ing sick of the word honey, and I swear I think I've developed a grudge against colors.

I think I'll call it quits @ 35% before I start hunting down my kid's colors to boil in a vat of honey.

"If they ever find you ... run" is a lesson her mother had repeated to Jenna over and over again, but when 'they' - the beautiful, graceful and dangerous shape shifting Ikati - do find her, Jenna decides to ignore her urge to flee in order to finally get the answers to the questions that have haunted her for her entire life. And that decision and those answers - and the sensual enthralling Leander who knows all of Jenna's secrets - will change Jenna forever.

I really enjoyed Geissenger's debut novel and Night Prowler series starter. It's not that the story itself is incredibly original but there is at times an almost lyrical quality to the writing that I found captivating. And I liked that Jenna who decides to go with Leander even though he is likely an enemy, doesn't immediately allow her hormones to overrule her distrust of him - which heightens the sensual tension between them - and I liked that it was her decision to hold herself back with silence and determination that drew out that tension instead of the more common device that many authors use of throwing in some external interruptions in to achieve the same result - that type of device which shifts the decision to 'fate' instead of 'choice' often makes me loose respect for the heroine. I am a shape shifter fan, so another thing that I really liked about the story was the way that Geissinger shows how different the Ikati's senses are from those of our mere mortal ones, my favorite scene involved wine tasting - which I know sounds odd - and was a very effective demonstration of that difference.

My only nits with the book were that the wrap-up of the story, especially in the last couple pages, kind of lost steam. However that nit didn't dim my enjoyment of Shadow's Edge so I will definitely read Morgan's book, Edge of Oblivion due out October of 2012, to find out what happens next in the world and I hope to get more of an interesting secondary character who definitely had my sympathy in this story - though, while Geissinger says that she has a book planned for Christian, it is not one of the next two currently in the works.

After finishing Shadow's Edge I am still not clear exactly about the UF/PNR balance of the series since, even though it lacks the first person voice of UF and Jenna and Leander's story seems fairly settled, there is still a lot to learn about the consequences of certain discoveries mean for Jenna. And while I am not sure what role the past pair will play in the future, I am hoping that the Night Prowlers ends up being one of those one-couple-per-book series that evolves into more of an ensemble effort as the overall arc of the series progresses.

I loved JT's Wicked Games series and jumped on this foray into shifters and paranormal when it showed up my Prime Reading account. The story has many of the elements I really enjoyed in Wicked Games: a strong, determined heroine who turns the tables on the alpha-male hero; super hot chemistry between the hero and heroine; a well-paced suspenseful plot; very steamy adult content.

Unfortunately, the shift paranormal seems to impact the smooth prose I experienced in her other books. Although set in the modern world, JT seems to be channeling historical romance. But as these pivotal days are wont to do, this one began with no hint of what was to come. More disappointing were several plot holes and one painfully abrupt transition. Finally, although the story does have the requisite HEA, the heroine's reconciliation with the shifters didn't work for me.

I won't be going on with the series, but there are 3 Bad Habit books to check out.

I recently read 1 and 2 of the Slow burn series and really enjoyed them. So, I thought I would give this a try. Um....no. I think this was her first book, so I will try the next one. This was so over the top with the overwhelming passions or whatever?
From the first moments of the book and they see each other.

Maybe 3.5 Stars? 2.5 Stars maybe?

I don't know. I enjoyed it well enough for what it is: a shifter paranormal romance. Not always my thing, but it's one that the audio was easy to listen to.

I did kind of like the shifter world set up, though the vapor deal is kind of weird. And I don't buy that their natural shape is animal. They are born looking human. They don't shift until puberty or so. Even then, they spend 90% of their time in human form. Maybe more. If my natural shape were a big cat and I lived in a secluded village with all my other cat people, I would think most of us would spend our time in cat form. Not live in a manor house as humans do. I don't know. It just didn't jive. It also annoyed me a little that they considered themselves "panthers," which is not an actual species but instead a name given to big cats that are black, most often jaguars and leopards. So the fact that Jenna shifted to is not really possible.

Plus, I just didn't love Jenna. She was confrontational for no reason, claimed to want answers but got pissed off when they were given to her, and then when she was given the opportunity to make the changes to the very system she was railing against it never even dawned on her to do so. Leander had to tell her.

He was like, "Well, don't you want to change things? You do don't you?"

And she was all, "What? Change things? Really?"

SMH.

Speaking of Leander, sometimes the the interactions between the two bordered on rapey. I don't know how I feel about that. But he was a ridiculously good looking, swarthy Englishman so......

Writing this down, it sounds like I didn't like it but that's not really the case. I did mostly. It was entertaining for an instalust, instalove shifter romance story. If that's your shtick then you may like this one too.

I decided to give this book a try since Amazon listed Shadows Edge as 'new and newsworthy'. I noticed righy away that the premise was awfully similar to Christine Feehan's Dark Carpathian and leopard series but hey, I was hoping to stumble across a hidden gem, a diamond among tales, the next big thing, or at least a new favorite author.
Um, yeah that didn't happen. Though not the worst floating around amazon, this book was definitely not newsworthy. The writing is average and the characters were glaringly one dimensional stereotypes of the old style romance variety.
The male hero was a possessive he-man chauvinist while the female heroine was a shrinking violet with a mass amount of power who happened to be too stupid to utilize it.
Also the author kept trying to heap on new (and obvious) twists and turns in the plot but instead of it blending together seamlessly, the the story seemed forced and contrived.
So, I give Shadows Edge two stars. The writing wasn't bad but the plot, it's characters, and the word building needed work.

3.5 stars. Ok so to be fair, I've read this author's contemporary work and love it so much, I compared those to this book which I think is her first. And you can see a huge difference in the writing. In Shadows Edge the writing is over the top descriptive and way too flowery. Every single thing had a very colorful description and it was honestly distracting. I liked the story and will continue with the series when I'm in a PNR mood because I suspect she gets better with each book. This heroine wasn't my favorite, to me there's a fine line between strong and downright stubborn and obnoxious. And I found the fact that she knew about her "gifts" from a very young age, and there's absolutely zero hinting at that to the reader, a little strange. This was a good book, for a first book, and I'll definitely read on since I'm intrigued about Morgan and how her situation plays out.

I'm liking the start to this series so far. It's a bit of a unique twist on shifters with a few things that were revealed. I really liked the heroine but there were a few moments that her decision didn't really make sense to me. It took a bit of time to like the Ikati only because of the way they treat their females. I can't wait to see the changes that will come with Jenna bringing her views into the Ikati. I think good changes are about to come.

”Life is pain and everyone dies, but true love lives forever.”

Jenna's birthday toast from her mother every year after her father disappeared was unforgettable to say the least, but unfortunately was the basis of her parents’ tragic relationship. For most of her life, Jenna has been confused by her mother's repeated warnings and lives a solitary existence because of the paranoia they brought on. As the years passed without incident, the unexplained gave her no reassurance and only a false sense of security. That is until she finally meets the “they” she was warned to run and hide from. Now Jenna is willing to risk it all for answers.

“Don’t mistake us for humans, Jenna. The Ikati are animals. And like all animals, we’re concerned with only three things: hierarchy, territory, and procreation.”

Jenna is inconvenient and dangerous to the rich, powerful, and elite Ikati race. As the half-Blood with unknown abilities, Jenna could jeopardize their entire existence. They offer her a chance to prove herself as an ally or traitor, but with her freedom at stake, Jenna is only willing to go so far. Even if that means giving up on the chance to shed the loneliness and experience something more with the Alpha leader who has managed to get under her skin. Yet without trust and the constant threat against the Ikati and several against Jenna, exploring anything outside of the physical is too risky to her heart.

From the beginning, the reader is easily drawn into the Egyptology intro to the Ikati race. Thereafter, the story wastes no time in bringing Jenna's uniqueness to light and so begins her and the readers journey from normal everyday to the extraordinary unknown. Jenna is so much stronger than even she knows and a quite likable character despite her stubbornness. And while her full “Gifted” potential is still a bit unexplored, there was just enough revealed to keep the story moving quickly. The history of the Ikati is well drawn without being overwhelming nor is it front loaded on to the reader in the beginning. Instead, the author reveals relevant and interesting points, throughout the plotline. It all leaves just enough mystery for the next installment and I am very excited to see where it all leads as this race of shifters continues to evolve.

The conflict in the story is short lived in the action department as it leads to a bigger war brewing for future books in the series. Instead the focus is on Jenna and the building pressure of learning who and what she is and the conflict is more romance based. Leander is definitely worthy of the Alpha male title and manages to steal the show with his displays of affection both verbally and physically. Romance readers looking for a healthy dose of spice with great sexual tension will love how it is portrayed in this story. This author has definitely proven her worth in the romance genre by seamlessly blending paranormal and fantasy elements. I couldn't have been more impressed by this debut novel and absolutely plan on coming back for more.

So when I started this book, I had no expectations. The premise was good but it started off a bit rocky. I got pulled out the story several times in the beginning because the author continuously shifted POVs very often. The timeline also had me confused at first. Once I settled into the story, everything shifted and I began to enjoy the characters and the way the story unfolded. Jenna is a strong character and I appreciated the fact that the author didn't try to make her fall for Leander and lose herself. However, it wrapped up a bit too tidy at the end and I thought she could have did a better job at world building. I still don't feel as though I know that much about Ikati shifters. Overall, I want to see where this series is going.

Shadow's Edge was about a 3.5 star read for me. I enjoyed the story, but I grew a little frustrated with the main characters Jenna and Leander. Personally they did the mating dance a little too long and Jenna was exasperating in her behavior, driving Leander crazy. I had to chuckle at some of the descriptions. Since Jenna and Leander are Ikati, a type of panther shifter, they have enhanced senses. Jenna is special, she has enhanced abilities and has a very good sense of smell so she worked as a sommelier at an upscale restaurant. The descriptions of the wine flavors were entertaining, to say the least.

I did enjoy the book and this series looks promising so I will most likely continue reading.

1/5; 1 star; DNF

It seems like with audio-books I find it easier to abandon a story that is not appealing to me. This started out with an interesting PNR feel but quickly became too obsessed with the sexual attraction between two fated mates and the annoying inner dialogue of a Jenna who was all over the place in terms of personality and character. I started wondering, repeatedly: 'When is this story going to go somewhere?'

I also have come to the realization that I can't listen to Justine Eyre as a narrator. I don't like the way she does accents, male voices and even, petty as it seems, the way she pronounces words, drags them out, and stresses the wrong parts of sentences.
Abandoned after about 2 hours.

I tried to think of one word I could describe this book in, but I couldn't choose just one...Exciting, on edge, dark, alluring and sexy. All these describe this awesome new addition to the paranormal romance/ urban fantasy genres.
I was sent this book to review, thinking it sounded interesting, but never expected it was going to become a new favorite series of mine. I was hooked after only a few pages.
It's said that fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Karen Marie Moning will love this novel and they're right. Although, I find it has more of a J.R Ward (The Black Dagger Brotherhood series) feel to it.

Their world is different than your usual paranormal world. They cut themselves off from our world all together. Living in a hidden town, almost like a fortress. Incased rough stone walls to keep unwanted beings out. Or themselves in, as Morgan would say) Humans are beneath the Ikati. No Ikati is allowed to procreate with a human, its against their law and is punishable by death.

Even though the punishment is so fierce for mating with a human, Jenna's father fell deeply in love with her mother. He regretted nothing, but he also paid the ultimate price. Jenna has been on the run for her whole life. Moving from place to place with her mother. After he mother dies when Jenna's only 18, she's left with only her mother's advice on how to live and hide on her own and that's exactly what she does. She relies on no one but herself, but she's lonely.

Leander is the Alpha of the Ikati. A character I won't soon forget.
Quotes are not final, since the copy I reviewed from is a ARC
"One stood out apart, slightly ahead of the others. Like his companions he had ebony hair, honey-bronze skin, feral, flashing eyes. Be he was larger, broad-shouldered and substantial, forbidding even with all that perfect symmetry of bone structure, that jawline seemed sharpened on a diamond cutter's lathe. Something about the mouth: sensual but hard, so hard it seemed he hadn't smiled in years. Or ever."

I loved Leander and Jenna's chemistry. Their banter was also fun to read. She's a strong willed woman who won't be told what to do, not even from an alpha.

One things I had mixed feelings for was Jenna and Christian's relationship. I feel bad for him. In some ways he reminds me of Phury,(The Black Dagger Brotherhood) having feelings for a woman who only has eyes for his brother. I look foward to reading more about him and for him to have his HEA. I'm not sure if she'll stick with the same protagonists or if she'll switch it up for Morgan or Christian. Either way, I'm looking forward to reading more.

As you can tell by my five star review, I highly recommend this novel. I was super glad to get a chance at reading an ARC and I look forward to what comes next in the Night Prowler series.

Well, I guess I have put this off long enough.
I love J.T. Geissinger. Absolutely crazy about her writing. But this book? Not so much.
I think this is her 1st published book. It's from 2012. It's definitely NOT her best writing.
In fact, I would say it is her worst. I'm hoping that the series will get better as I read it. I bought them all and I really need it to get tons better.

Every physical movement someone makes is extensively over described.
So is every scenic detail. Including every rug, room, floor, table.
Every facial feature.
Every thought.
This happens constantly throughout the story. In fact, every page. Filled with descriptions.
It slowed the story down to a snails pace. It definitely got on my nerves and kept me from connecting with the characters and the world build.
Heck, it was so pervasive I'm surprised we weren't told what kind of toilet paper was used and how it felt on your ass!

There were a lot of things I didn't understand.
I think it's weird that even the smallest of injuries That really didn't make sense to me. A big injury, I could understand that.

I really don't understand their reasons for . I know what we are told about The Law, but! Their reasons and the descriptions of him, didn't add up for me.

I don't understand Jenna at all. I liked Leander. Don't hate Jenna, just don't get her. Why is she ALWAYS so stubbornly quite about what she is. What she can do. She refuses to tell him anything but expects him to tell her everything. Ugh. She's a bitch. A snooty, snotty Bitch. And I think she came off a bit TSTL many times. That annoyed me.

So far my favorite character in this book is Morgan. And while she is just a major side character in this book, she is the mfc in book #2.

You probably don't understand why I was so upset that I was disappointed in this book. But you can compare it to when your a kid and you find out there Santa Claus isn't real.
I wanted to love this book. PNR is my top favorite genre, but it is really hard to find awesome books in it. So I'm devastated that this was so bad.

Oh, btw, the steamy sex scenes were 'Okay'. Nothing like what she writes now. But Okay.

I almost forgot about something else. The timeline. It was really hard to tell 'When' this was taking place. Sometimes if felt historical. Sometimes contemporary.
Confusing.

For years, Jenna has been on the run. She can remember when she was a little girl and her mother told her that she was special and when "they" came for her that she should be prepared. Only Jenna did not know who "they" were.

Jenna's twenty fifth birthday is approaching. While at the grocery store, Jenna feels a strong presence. It is he, the one with the piercing eyes. He has found her. Jenna knows she should run but she is tried of running. She is making a stand. Although, it could be the wrong move.

This is the first book that I have read by author, J.T. Geissinger. After reading this book, I will have to check out more of her work. There was not a lot of romance happening in this book but that was fine by me. Jenna was a strong female persona that if she had fallen for Leander right away, I would not have believed it. The whole sexual tension and cat and mouse game was fun to watch. When Jenna and Leander finally did the deed in the last third of the book, it was steamy, just like I expected it would be.

Every time that Jenna would challenge Leander, I got a smile on my face. He needed someone like Jenna. What I liked most about this book was the concept. The fact that the characters are not just shape shifters but ones that can transform into vapor. Like clouds of mist, they are not just tied to turing into panthers. I can not remember a book that I have read recently hwere the shape shifters could turn into vapor and float around. I would have to say this book was on the edge of being urban fantasy then paranormal. It was a little on the dark side (which I enjoyed) and had some adult like content. So for the teen readers, I would suggest the reader by like sixteen and older. I hope there will be more books. I would like to see Leander's brother, Christian gets a feature.

4 1/2 Stars!
This is a really good book. The mythology and the shifter abilities are really cool and interesting. Somewhat different. The two main characters, Jenna and Leander have a lot of tension and sexuality between them and Jenna, the female lead is very smart and strong. In fact she may be the hero of the story. The male lead, Leander is strong and smart too. Very alpha without being an ass. The thing that kept this book from being a 5 star for me is that it is extremely wordy. Way too many flowery unnecessary descriptive words. Other than that, I loved it. I'm on to the next book in the series. Happy reading!

This was a boring book and it took me forever to get through as I had kept breaking to read other things.

Jenna is a loner who is running from something she doesn’t even know. She understands that she’s different but someone bad is hunting her.
At a meat market she felt a difference in energy and knew that mobsters from her dreams have finally found her.

Leander, a member of the Ikati shapeshifters from England has been watching Jenna. They were unsure if the half-bred would manifest powers common to their kind so they waited in the shadows. A high price was paid for Jenna’s life so they want to see what she will become.

The story was just slow in audio and it wasn’t really interesting. I didn’t care why they (the Ikati) were in hiding and their power struggle. I didn’t even enjoy the love story. I never connected with this story.

Jenna has spent her whole life running and hiding from "monsters" that her mother warned her about. After her mother's death (dad disappeared when she was little), Jenna is alone but she has made a nice little life for herself. Then the "monsters" come for her. It turns out Leander and his group of Ikati (cat shifters) are actually just trying to determine if Jenna has enough power as a half-blooded Ikati to join their community. Full of distrust, especially given the intense reaction she has to Leander, Jenna agrees to go with them back to their home in England. There she learns more about their barbaric culture and her gifts. Women are not treated well in the culture and have no freedoms. Since she was raised in the outside world, she is reluctant to stay. Just as Jenna decides to escape, an old enemy of the Ikati resurfaces and stirs up fears within the community. Jenna may be the only one that can help.

My thoughts about this book are a little mercurial. I liked it, but there were a few parts that bugged me. Jenna's character, in particular, is all over the place - one minute she is swept up in hot lust, the next she is cold as a robot. She wants answers and the truth, but when Leander gives her the truth, she can't handle it and throws a temper tantrum. Then there is the whole treatment of women issue in this book. It serves a purpose as a catalyst for some things to happen in the plot, but it just always makes me cringe. There were some unexpected twists in the plot - I always like those, even if they come out of nowhere. I should also mention that this book was smuttier than I expected. So yay for that.

Old idea different take

Yes a shifter story where the heroine doesn’t know she is a shifter and they come for her. Not an original idea, but the way it played out and the plot was interesting and sucked you in.

I started listening to the story and yet again it fit to a place where I had to see what would happen so I read.

I really didn’t like Leander. He was so confusing to me and he seemed to change his mind on a whim. So unalpha like. I also got confused that if he was the alpha why did he need an assembly and why didn’t he make changes to the law. He is an Alpha be an Alpha!!

Jenna was ok she also was very naive in her thinking and was a tad too defiant at times.

The second book was set up well and I will read it

This is the world of the Ikati. Never heard of it? That’s because it’s a secret world, one that is isolated from the human world, and rarely touches it. It’s also one of my very favorite worlds to read about and immerse myself in. J.T. Geissinger has imagined a world where panther shifters have a secret society and live in secret bastions in different part of the world.
Jenna is anything but a typical American girl. She is alone in a world where she is clearly different. She has spent her life hiding her special abilities from everyone. She is approaching her twenty fifth birthday, the birthday when an Ikati first shifts to panther form. She doesn’t know this. She becomes aware that she is being watched by a strange group of three beautiful people. They have come to California to find her to see if she manifests any of the many different abilities that only an Ikati can have. Jenna is only half Ikati so they don’t expect a lot from her, even though her father was one of their strongest Alpha’s ever. The leader of the Ikati group from England, Leander, sees Jenna and immediately is drawn to her. It isn’t long before he realizes how talented she really is. Now all he and the others with him have to do is talk her into going to England and taking her place among their group-the one thing her deceased mother had always warned her from doing.

The characters of Jenna and Leander were very well realized by the author. I really liked Jenna and felt for her situation-not knowing what she is or where she truly belonged. Leander was a total alpha male and at times not my favorite character. But I got over it, as it ended up being such a good romance. And really who wants cookie cutter characters? I don’t. I was also intrigued by his brother and second in command, Christian. In a way, I liked him better then Leander and he does get his own book eventually, one that I absolutely loved! (Book#4)
I loved this book and the entire series. The world building was pretty genius. This becomes more and more apparent as you read the series. The author has realized a world that is both fascinating and at times, not exactly perfect. Ikati politics are not always fair and those in charge are not always good. There is also a group that knows about them and makes it their life’s purpose to eradicate them. This makes for suspense and mystery, in addition to a really good, pretty steamy romance.
This for me was the type of series that you read the book and have to immediately buy the next one. There is four so far and one more is due out in June. I think that one is the last one and I will be so sorry for it to be over. Any paranormal romance /urban fantasy fan should enjoy this well written and totally intriguing story.(RabidReads,ca)

Full disclosure-I am a member of this author’s street team.

Okay where to begin with this review.... I know, the crayola box! I have never in my life read a book with with so many color descriptions. Not kidding, not exaggerating. I did a search for a few colors in my kindle iPad app.

The Color Blue got 17 results, a few for example:"bottomless azure blue". "blue and charcoal shadows", "blue eyes, pale and rhuemy", "into the silvery blue horizon".

The Color Honey/Honeyed got 18 results, a few for example: "honey bronzed skin", "thick honeyed waves", "cascading mass of honeyed blonde hair" "the sunlight poured like honey through the dormered windows".

The Color Green got 52 results, a few for example: "his eyes were a bright laughing green", "hooded green eyes against warm umber skin", "eyes to a fierce, brilliant green shining and lucent like an emerald held in the light", " sharp points of burning fell green, flat and dark with animal rage" and so on and so on like I said 52 results for the color green.

Color Emerald got 9 results, I guess emerald could fall under the green category giving Green a whopping 61 results.

The Color Yellow, Charcoal and Orange only got 5 results each. Must not be favorite colors from the crayola box.

The Color Amber got 13 results, a few for example: "the muscles in his abdomen, ambers and charcoals and deepest grays outlined planes and angles of his flesh", "her closed eyelids to burnished ambers and golds", " the candlelight glowed amber and honey against her hair", " contained gorgeous deep flecks of amber and citrine embedded that sparked fire into there cool emerald depths"

And the most popular color for this book is Black with 86 results! At this point I don't need to give examples, I think everyone gets the idea of what I am talking about.

I would rename this book The Crayola Crayon Box and be done with it.

Its hard to enjoy a book when every other sentence contains a color description. So, no I did not like this book at all.

As for the narration, its Justine Eyre so it was fine. Not the best not the worst. The men sound like men and that's always good.

If you want to read about colors this is a great book if not then I suggest you skip it. it was extremely annoying (in a very dark cloudy blackish, greenish way).
