Monday Night Book Discussion Monday, Jan. 14 | 7 p.m. No registration required. Location: Technology Center Conference Room Discuss “Americanah” by Chimamanda Adichie. A young woman from Nigeria leaves behind her home and her first love to start a new life in America, only to find her dreams are not all she expected.

Anime Club Wednesday, Jan. 23 | 7-8:30 p.m. No registration required. Location: Prescott Room Watch the anime “Beautiful Bones,” have a snack, and talk about it with other anime fans. The anime will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles. This anime title is rated TVMA. The story centers around high school student Shotaro Tatewaki and the beautiful Sakurako Kujo, who loves beautiful bones. Together they investigate various deaths.

Technology Classes

Word Basics Wednesday, Jan. 2 | 7:15 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Learn how to create and edit a document with Microsoft Word. In this class, participants will become familiar with Word’s interface, including the ribbon and title bar; creating a document; selecting and formatting text, including copy/paste, size, color and bullets; and printing, saving, closing and opening documents. Basic mouse and computer skills are required. Excel Basics Wednesday, Jan. 2 | 6 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Excel spreadsheets allow you to store, organize and manipulate data. In this class, participants will become familiar with the Excel interface including title bar, tabs, columns, rows and formula bar; creating a spreadsheet, and inserting text and values; using basic functions; writing basic formulas to make Excel do the math for you; and printing sheets. Basic mouse and computer skills are required. 50+ Computer Cruisin’ Thursday, Jan. 3 | 1:15 p.m. — Topic: Coding Games Thursday, Jan. 10 | 1:15 p.m. — Topic: Microsoft Word Thursday, Jan. 17 | 1:15 p.m. — Topic: Google Slides Registration recommended. Google Sheets Basics Thursday, Jan. 3 | 6 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Tired of paying for Microsoft Excel? Give Google Sheets a try. Google provides a free, awesome spreadsheet program via your gmail account that works just like Excel. (You can create an account for free if you don’t have one yet.) In this class, participants will become familiar with the Sheets interface; creating a new spreadsheet and adding content; customizing and editing data; working with rows and columns; writing basic formulas to make Google Sheets do the math for you; and printing sheets. Basic mouse and computer skills are required. Google Docs Basics Thursday, Jan. 3 | 7:15 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Looking for an alternative to Microsoft Word? Learn how to create and edit a document with Google Docs. In this class, participants will become familiar with creating a Doc; selecting and formatting text, including using copy/paste, size, color and bullets; and printing, saving, closing and opening Docs. Basic mouse and computer skills are required. Keyboarding Practice for Adults Saturday, Jan. 5 or 12 | 9:30 a.m. No registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Keyboarding is the first step to computer literacy and an essential skill in today’s workforce. Using an interactive online program, current typists will learn how to become more proficient and improve their keyboarding skills. For those new to keyboarding, you will learn how to type using correct hand posture. Come when you can and improve your skills. Smart Home Wednesday, Jan. 9 | 1:30 or 6:30 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Have you thought of making your home smart? Learn about a variety of products you could easily purchase for your home. Participants will get to see smart devices in action. Smartphone Cleanup Thursday, Jan. 10 | 6:30 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Time to clean up your smartphone. Slow, sluggish phones or messages regarding insufficient storage are annoying. Learn how to make space and clean up your device.The class begins with a discussion of smartphone cleaning and then Individual help will be provided by tech staff for participants. Soldering & Electronics Tuesday, Jan. 15 | 7 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Participants may choose a soldering or electronic project in this class. Soldering for Beginners: With a soldering iron, patrons will learn how to melt solder material to form a bond between two items. Arduino Electronics: Learn how to assemble and communicate with electronic sensors. Google Chrome Apps & Extensions Wednesday, Jan. 16 | 6:30 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Google Chrome is the most-used web browser worldwide. Google’s browser allows users to navigate the internet quickly and easily, and also provides many useful extensions and apps. Learn how to open up new possibilities in Chrome and learn about a variety of add-ons. Smartphone Basics Wednesday, Jan. 16 | 1:30 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab This class offers the basics of using an Android or Apple phone, including help with managing settings, privacy and apps. Cutting Cable Friday, Jan. 18 | 9:30 a.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Learn what options are available to reduce or even eliminate your cable bill. Streaming devices, free apps and other helpful tech tips will be discussed. eMaterials Help Saturday, Jan. 19 | 2:15 p.m. Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Learn how to work with digital library materials which includes ebooks, eaudiobooks, movies, TV and music. The class begins with an introduction of platforms that can be used for eMaterials. Hoopla, RBDigital and Sunflower eLibrary will be the main focus. Individual help will be provided by Technology staff for participants.

Get help with your resume, cover letter, interviewing, completing job applications or job searching. Participants who work on a resume or cover letter will receive up to five prints at no cost.

Book Bunch Tuesday, Jan. 29 | 6-7 p.m. Ages 11-17 Registration required. Location: Prescott Room We will meet, eat pizza and discuss “Roller Girl” by Victoria Jamieson. This Newbery Honor Award Winner and New York Times bestseller is a heartwarming graphic novel about friendship and surviving junior high through the power of roller derby

Technology Clubs

Teen Tech Time Tuesday, Jan. 8, 15 or 22 | 2:30 p.m. OR Thursday, Jan. 10, 17 or 24 | 4 p.m. Ages 13-17 Registration recommended. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab If you love to learn about technology, join this techie hangout for teens. Teens will be allowed to choose from a variety of projects including, but not limited to: photo editing, 3D printing, coding, Chromebooks, Bloxels, Spheros and 3D pens. Basic computer skills are required. This is a drop in class that meets the first three Thursdays of the month.

Gaming

Open Gaming Sundays | 1-6 p.m. Thursdays | 6-9 p.m. Youth & Teens No registration required. Location: Technology Center Gaming is available on PS4, Nintendo Switch & Wii. All you need is your library card in good standing.

Brainy Babies Mondays & Wednesdays | 9:30 a.m. Ages birth to 2 No registration required. Location: Imagination Station Bring your little one to an interactive program with simple books, gentle movement and songs. LEGO Club Thursday, Jan. 3 & 17 | 4-5 p.m. Ages 6-12 Registration required. Location: Prescott Room Do you love to build with LEGO? Join fellow Master Builders as we create something new at SPL. Builders of all skill levels are welcome. Creations that complete the build challenge for each session will be featured in our rotating “LEGO Hall of Fame”. Participants will use the library set of LEGOs, so that we can mix and match worry-free. Lil’ Picassos Friday, Jan. 4 | 10:15 a.m. Ages 18 months-4 years No registration required. Location: Prescott Room Littles learn about color and texture during this hands-on program that allows them to experiment with art while having fun!

Crazy 8s Math Club Mondays, Jan. 7-March 11 | 4-5 p.m. (No class on Jan. 21 or Feb. 25) Grades 3-5 Registration required. Location: Prescott Room Crazy 8s Math Club is designed to get elementary school kids fired up about math. Every week, kids get to build stuff, run and jump, make a mess and make friendships at the same time. It’s nothing like your usual math club. This club meets eight times, and signing up for the first meeting reserves your spot for the following weeks. Sensory Playtime Tuesday, Jan. 8 | 9:30 a.m. Ages 6 months-2 years No registration required. Location: Prescott Room Play and learn with activities that engage all five senses and promote learning through play. We will also be making sensory bags to take home. Kids on Canvas Tuesday, Jan. 8 | 6 p.m. Ages 6 and older Registration required. Location: Prescott Room Experience painting on canvas paper or canvas board using acrylics. Music Storytime Thursday, Jan. 10 | 10:15 a.m. Ages 3-5 No registration required. Location: Prescott Room Join us for a story followed by songs and movement activities. Do You Wanna Build a Snowman? Saturday, Jan. 12 | 10 a.m. Ages 3-5 Registration required. Location: Prescott Room What’s better than playing in the snow and building a snowman? Staying warm while doing it! Join us for some sensory play with a snowman theme. We will be making snow dough and building indoor snowmen.

Dance Storytime Tuesday, Jan. 15 | 10:15 a.m. Ages 3-5 No registration required. Location: Prescott Room Join us for this active storytime that combines great stories and movement. Dance Storytime is offered every third Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. and is hosted by Tamara Howe School of Dance. Storytime Thursday, Jan. 23 & 30 | 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24 & 31 | 10:15 a.m. Ages 3-5 No registration required. Location: Prescott Room Join us for good stories, rhymes, music and fun! Storytime is offered every Wednesday and Thursday from Jan. 23-March 28. Book Buddies Thursday, Jan. 31 | 4, 4:15, 4:30 or 4:45 p.m. Ages 6-10 Registration required. Location: Prescott Room. Practice reading tail-waggin’ books during a 15-minute session with the best listener ever. Our canine friend, Ari, creates a nonjudgmental environment in which young readers can build confidence and have a doggone good time.

Location: Technology Center Learning Lab If you love to learn about technology, join in this techie club for youth. January’s topic will be Bloxels. Youth will use a gameboard, blocks and a mobile device to create their own video games. Basic computer skills are required. The class meets for three consecutive weeks. Tiny Tech Club Tuesday, Jan. 8, 15 & 22 | 4 p.m. Ages 5-8 Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab If you love to learn about technology, join in this fun club for tiny techs. Learning Games & Keyboarding Saturday, Jan. 5 & 12 | 2-3 p.m. Ages 6-12 Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Sneak in some extra learning time by playing fun math and reading games. For those who want to learn or improve their keyboarding skills, an online program is available and individualized for each participant. Minecraft Friday, Jan. 4, 11, 18 | 3 or 4 p.m. Ages 6-16 Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Explore and create in this world entirely made of blocks! The only limitation is your imagination. Players of all skill levels are welcome. Roblox Saturday, Jan. 5 or 12 | 3 p.m. Ages 6-12 Registration required. Location: Technology Center Learning Lab Play Roblox, an immersive 3D environment where you can compete, race, participate in simulations, role play, navigate obstacle courses and even create your own games. Players may work with specific games as instructed or play on their own.
