A long-empty fitness center on Broad Street in Woodbury was demolished to make way for redevelopment.

WOODBURY - Demolition of a shuttered fitness center will delay the opening of the city's summer pop-up park.

Lot 323 — a pop-up park, concert venue and beer garden — was set to open June 1 in the area of the razed gym. Woodbury FAF, the park's organizers, pushed the opening by two weeks, rescheduling opening night for June 15.

While the property is clear of debris, heavy equipment remains on the property, secured with chain-link fence.

Earlier this year Woodbury bought the fitness center property on Broad Street and four more properties, two abandoned houses on Centre Street and a gravel parking lot behind the now-demolished gym.

The parking lot of the gym had been used for Lot 323 since 2016.

The city has plans for the footprint of the former fitness center.

Eventually, the site — between Towne LIquors and Protocol Staffing — will be redeveloped into a permanent structure.

During the two to four years of planning for the permanent site plan, the city is working with nonprofits on Gather, a semi-permanent building functioning as a community center.

The construction of the Gather building has also been delayed.
