If you are embarking on the admittedly dangerous journey of deep-frying a turkey this Thanksgiving, please be careful. It is important that you do it right, but even more important that you do not do it horribly wrong.

For your edification, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has taken the time to illustrate a good way to not do it:

But that's not the only way you shouldn't do it. Also try not doing it like this:

And just for good measure, you can add just a dash of "not doing it like this either":

To be crystal clear:

  • Don't overfill your container of piping hot oil.
  • Don't put even your properly-filled container of piping hot oil near or inside something you would prefer to remain not on fire.
