The Silver Crescent

Rate this book
Betrayal, murder and a stolen fortune bring Elise Baxter to Cedar Bend, Michigan, on a quest to solve a family mystery—and recover the missing treasure.

Max Holt impulsively buys a crumbling Victorian mansion and fulfills his dream of restoring it as a restaurant and inn. Aware of its reputation for being haunted, he adds to the mystique by building a garden path of old tombstones, one of which belongs to the original owner of the house, Cyrus Mosby—the man whose legacy Elise has traced, and who allegedly stole her ancestral share of a Colorado silver mine over a century ago.

Following clues gleaned from old diaries and a visit from the spirit of her great-great-grandmother, Elise seeks out Max and his inn. Not knowing if she can trust Max with her family secret, Elise pretends her interest is in researching Cyrus, whose own violent death remains a mystery.

An intense attraction between Max and Elise leads him to believe she may be the girl of his dreams. But when he discovers her true interest in him and his inn, memories of a past betrayal threaten to end their passionate relationship. Elise, finding herself falling in love with Max, fears her deception may cost her more than she is willing to lose.

Once persuaded the stolen silver is hidden somewhere in the inn, and captivated by the idea of a treasure hunt, Max and Elise begin the search together, aided by the resident ghosts, Cyrus and Virginia.

Their treasure hunt seems like a harmless adventure until someone tries to steal the diaries. Unknown to Max and Elise, there are others—including an evil presence—who are driven by greed and will stop at nothing to unlock the mystery of the Silver Crescent.

Can I first start with this book cover??? Look at it!! It just draws you in and you know that there is a mystery and steamy romance waiting for you! I absolutely love this book and it's cover!

Okay, enough fangirling over it and down to business... Grahl has a hit on her hands. This story that she created left me wanting more! The mystery and hidden treasure is a thrill, finding all the different clues and who and how they link to those who lived long ago.

The paranormal aspect was great! Sometimes, you read about ghosts and they are almost comical and unrealistic, I didn't find that to be true with The Silver Crescent.

The romance was sizzling between Elise and Max, and I might say that I am a fan of that man!! I could go on and on how I swoon over Max Holt!

Let me give you a little taste of what The Silver Crescent has to offer!!

This not only a story of an epic romance, but it's a story about a treasure hunt with ghosts that not only help by leaving clues, but ghosts who tries to ward the characters away by causing unpleasant and horrifying events. With a dark and mysterious history of the Inn and it's past owner.

This book will leave you on the edge of your seat, wanting more and more romance between Elise and Max, as well as more history about what happened to the original owner and his companions.

Who killed who, why did they kill them...was it theft or was there more to it!

Join Elise, Max, Jack, Kathy and Oliver on this amazing journey and see how it ends!

The Silver Crescent by Debby Grahl is a 2014 Writer's Coffee Shop publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This story is one part historical mystery, one part ghost story, one part contemporary romance. Elise is determined to find out what happened to the silver and subsequent fortune one of her relatives had coming to them but it was mired in a murder scheme.

When Max Holt finds a charming but run down Victorian home , perfect for making into a bed and breakfast, he can't resist. But, when Elise shows up to work at the local newspaper the two of them continue to run into one another with rather mixed results.
The problem is Elise needs to get inside that house for she is sure the answers to all her questions are hidden there. But, Elise does have a little help from a pair of ghost determined to see that things turn out the right way. They also have a ghost in their midst determined to do otherwise. Armed with her grandmother's journals, Elise sets out to solve a long ago murder and find out what happened to the all the money.

I loved the references to the old daytime serial from the 1960's- Dark Shadows. I am glad to know someone besides me has watched those shows on Netflix. I also though the quotes which started each chapter were awesome. I love quotes and there are some really good ones cautioning against greed.

But, Max and Elise were both a little hard to take at times. I thought the mystery was compelling and the ghost were the stars of the show for me. I did like the secondary characters and especially Kathy. I never warmed up to Max. He remained too overbearing, manipulative, and I got tired of his constant need to apologize. He did realize he needed to work on some things and Elise was perhaps expecting too much too soon in some instances. I wished the romance had been mostly secondary because it almost took me out of the story about scavenger hunt for the money.
Naturally, someone knows about the alleged treasure and is making trouble. There were no shortage of suspects in that regard. I did have some suspicions, was surprised by the outcome.
While the story is good, it needed some work, perhaps some editing , a little trimming here and there would have helped a little, it just needed to speed up in some places as well and little cohesiveness. While I didn't really connect to Max and his redemption was “too little, too late” for me, there at least was some character growth and development for him and I was super happy with the way things worked out for all the ghost and the other characters in the story. So, although I had a few problems with some of the characters I still found the book enjoyable. 3.5 ( 3 stars for Goodreads and Amazon)

The silver crescent is a well written story with some twists and turns. Some things were easy to guess others not so much therefore I give this book 3 silver crescent!!

Max Holt is tired of corporate life while driving (in his Mustang) he sees a run down Victorian house and wants to buy it as he has always dreamed of owning his own inn. There are rumours in town that the house is haunted but he isn't a believer. Also there is treasure somewhere buried in the house so the legend says.

Elise Baxter has heard of the silver that should have gone to her great grandmother Grace but greed is nasty and makes people do stupid things, throughout each generation the story has been told until Elise's grandmother dies and finds some journals that lead straight to Max Holt.

And so the treasure hunt/romantic suspense starts. This is a well thought out story which is well written of the authour there is depth and I liked it but I didn't love it.

A delightful tale, sprinkled throughout with lots of ghost humour that will have you chuckling as you read along - their antics alone make this book worth the read.
The cast of characters comes together in a light and engaging way, and the author rarely, if ever, leaves a dull moment in with the many revelations and twists & turns she peppers the story with.

Absolutely fell in love with Max, from the minute he appeared in the book and thought the woman in the painting was watching him.

On the whole, a good ghost-filled mystery with dollops of relationships and romance thrown in to make an engaging tale.

Book blog tour post has been posted so I can now post my review :)

I received this book from the publishers through Netgalley, but this review is my own! Elise is a news reporter and rather than take the comfortable job of working at her father's newspaper, she heads off on her own and takes a job in the small town of Cedar Bend, but her real task is to find out what happened to her ancestors and their treasure of silver from the silver mine rush many many years ago.

Max Holt is a rich, handsome, but arrogant man, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants and what he wants right now is to turn this crumbling old mansion into a fancy restaurant and inn. He feels drawn to the house and the idea of having a haunted restaurant appeals to him and his bank balance. He drags along a few friends to help out with the house and soon both him and the house become the talk of the town.

Elise manages to upset Max at their first accidental meeting and is horrified when it turns out that he owns the house she has to investigate and search, but rather than telling him her plans, she lies to him and pretends she really wants to find out about Cyrus Mosby, the owner of the house, who was found dead, possibly murdered along with another unknown man, who may or may not have been her long lost uncle. How they were both killed nobody knows and there are no real reports at the time of their deaths either. Lucky for Elise though that Cyrus' ghost and that of his wife are around to help her out, even if they do give vague clues at times.

I loved the banter between Elise and Max at the beginning and watching it develop into a rather fast paced romance. I also loved the craziness of Elise, Max and his friends once they were all told about the silver and the fact that it may still be hidden in the house somewhere - they were like animals on a hunt and stopped at nothing to find it. I won't tell you whether they did or not, but it was funny reading about them knocking down walls and falling down stairs and seeing clues from the ghosts appearing right in front of their eyes.

I also really like the fighting amongst the ghosts too and the things one of them would do to try and scare the humans, who would just not be scared away no matter what he tried to do.
This was a funny romance and I was desperate at the end to see of Elise and Max really would find the treasure (and what a twist to the story it was at the end) and to see whether they would stay together or not. I would very much recommend reading this book whether you like romance, ghosts or a mixture of both.

Thanks to Debby and her publishers for letting me review her book and inviting me on their book blog tour!

A little treasure.

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful combination of sizzling contemporary romance with a touch of paranormal. It had everything I needed to keep me constantly entertained—helpful ghosties, a cracking mystery, colourful secondary characters, glimpses back in time. And did I mention the romance was sizzling? Oh, I did? Well, it's worth reiterating. Trust me.

The mystery surrounds a treasure hunt, of sorts. Our heroine, Elise Baxter's, ancestors left letters and clues that cause her to believe her family's stolen fortune—if it still exists or indeed ever existed—is inside the old home of a Mr. Cyrus Mosby in Cedar Bend, Michigan. Except Cyrus Mosby is no longer with us (he's mostly dead), and his house now belongs to young and annoyingly attractive Max Holt, who is in the process of renovating it with hopes of turning it into a restaurant and inn. Desperate for a way into the house, Elise sees a job as a journalist pop up in the town and makes the snap decision to up sticks and move there. Is she crazy for dropping everything to search for treasure that's been lost for centuries? Or has she just made the best decision of her life?

*****

So, that's the set-up, and let me say the execution of the mystery AND the romance was exceptionally well done. So often, contemporary romances have little in the way of background plot, which is fine most of the time if the romance is all-consuming and that's what you're in the mood for. But this book made me realise how nice it is on occasion to have a bit of oomph in that area. To have the momentum that an unravelling mystery presents help drive the romance forward in a more natural way. As you may or may not know, I'm always a sucker for a bit of emotional trauma, and this book gave me that in just the right amount when the truth about Elise's motives came to light. It was great, and made more so by the fact that I loved both main characters and was rooting for their HEA with all my might.

If I have any complaints, it's that I would have welcomed a bit more time to get to know Max's friends, as they were a bit hard to keep track of, and on occasion, Elise was a bit of a drama llama. But other than those two tiny things, this book was pretty perfect and a wonderful way to spend a few winter evenings.

Highly recommended!

I loved the paranormal aspect of The Silver Crescent. It's what drew me to this book...it's just the kind I like...not over the top unbelievable for me, but remotely possible! Just maybe there are ghosts all around us that we just can't see. Debby used this concept well to pull me in and hook me in The Silver Crescent!

Debby writes a well blended plot about romance, ghosts, and a decades old unsolved mystery. She pulls it all together well and each is very relevant to the other. The spirits have a story to tell and a mystery they've waited a long time to help solve. They've been waiting for the right people to come along. Max is finally doing what he's always wanted to do in a mansion that seemed to call to him as soon as he saw it. Elsie is trying to right a wrong from the past, and Max unknowing might play a big part in that. From a first meeting that did not leave a good impression, to a romance that has each of them falling fast and hard, they work together to solve a mystery. Elsie still has secrets though, secrets that might destroy what her and Max have found as a couple before they can find what was hidden in the past and put the spirits to rest.

Max and Elsie were not perfect people, and this made them into people I could imagine anywhere. Elsie has secrets, Max is over bearing, but the connection between them is easy to feel, and I enjoyed the progression of their relationship.

There is good vs evil in both the spirit world and the living of the present day...and all of them are making their presence known. There are quite a few living secondary characters too who all have a lot to add to the plot in a relevant way. I really, really enjoyed Oliver!!! He just might have been my favorite character!

Debby took me on a haunting, heart felt journey through the pages of The Silver Crescent. I liked how Max and Elsie met and the events that occurred afterwards took me through a modern day romance with a look to the past and how it impacts their lives today.

The Silver Crescent is well paced and easy to follow. I really enjoyed the quotes Debby used at the beginning of each chapter, they fit really well with the plot.

I'd recommend The Silver Crescent to any romance reader who likes some mystery and paranormal in the mix! I will definitely be reading more of Debby's books!

Review: The Silver Crescent by Debby Grahl is four stars fun, romance, and trickery.

If you’re looking for a fun, lighthearted read, The Silver Crescent by Debby Grahl is the book for you. Opening with a scene of betrayal and murder from the late 1800s, soon Elise, the great-great-great grandniece of one of those killed, and Max, the owner of the Victorian home where the killing took place, are on a treasure hunt to find missing silver. How Elise and Max found themselves in this small town a half an hour from Ann Arbor? Well that's another story! In addition to the treasure, they might find some romance too - and they do have a few fun sidekicks to lighten the mood anytime it gets too heavy. Oh, and did I mention the ghosts?!

Yes, even with the murder this is a sweet, fun book and the first that I’ve read by author Debby Grahl. If at times, I wanted to shake Max, I know that my reaction was not out of place as both Elise and Kathy did too. I have a feeling he will go through life oblivious to the actions of others, which is okay as long as he listens to wise counsel. But what man does?!

The ghosts were wonderfully fun, even the bad’un and Debby Grahl kept the pages turning with a wonderfully paced novel. In some ways, I felt like it was a grown up Nancy Drew novel, which is a perfect read for someone like me who was addicted to those stories. However, Nancy never had the HOT romantic encounters that Grahl depicts, so don’t expect this story to be tame.

There’s romance, intrigue, ghosts, hidden treasure, and fun secondary characters. Just a perfect light read for a cold winter’s night. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author and hope that some of her future stories will be set in the Low Country where she resides.

The Silver Crescent by Debby Grahl is four stars of fun, romance, and trickery.

This book is one of those books that is - in my opinion - a perfect example of a good story written badly. The story had so much potential but just fell flat on its face.

I really enjoyed the ghost story element, the whole mystery surrounding the silver, and was really curious as to find out what actually happened in the mine but that was the extent of what I enjoyed.

Anything that didn't directly involve the ghosts was kind of tedious.
There was too much nonsense and un-necessary drama and not enough character development. Seriously, the characters were as fleshed out as a cardboard cut out. The pacing of the story was poor and the big climatic ending was actually really anti-climatic.
Plus, the characters are supposed to be mid-late 20's / early thirties but speak (and at times act) like they are in their mid-late forties / early fifties.

I'd say if you are going to give this book a go, get a bottle of your favourite alcoholic beverage suitable for shots and take one every-time the overly camp chef threatens to quit and whines about ghosts. You will be totally hammered by about the mid-way point and the rest of the book will be fabulous.
