Resources Rising Stars 2017 another big hit with investors

More than 700 investors turned up this week to participate in the biggest-ever Resources Rising Stars Conference on the Gold Coast.  

In its 14th year, the popular event featured a record 32 ASX-listed junior and mid-tier resource companies and a well-received group of keynote speakers including prominent futurist Dr Keith Suter, fund manager Hedley Widdup and economist Chris Richardson.

On behalf of the entire Resources Rising Stars team, a huge thank you to all of our sponsoring companies, keynote speakers, the investors who participated and our many friends and supporters around the country.

- BHP Billiton told Australian shareholders that it will act counter-cyclically when spending money on projects, acquisitions or shareholder returns.

- Glencore threatened to wind up its extensive copper operations in Queensland’s north within a year in a move that could cost up to 2000 jobs, blaming high costs for energy, labour, freight and rail, as well a "materially changed" national investment environment.

- WA Premier Mark McGowan said his plan to make BHP and Rio pay future years' iron ore lease rentals in a lump sum to help solve WA's financial problems would only go ahead if the miners agreed and the federal government was willing to exclude it from the GST.

- Queensland Treasurer Curtis Pitt says the Palaszczuk government would not stand in the way of the federal government lending $1b to Indian giant Adani to help fund its controversial $16.5b Carmichael coal mine, rail and port project.
 
- Arrium administrator Mark Mentha said the two offers received this week from the two short-listed bidders for the Arrium operations, which include the Whyalla steelworks, both have "many conditions" that will need to be worked through.
 
- Nickel prices tumbled to 11-month lows on investor concern over rising supply from top producers Indonesia and the Philippines as well as weak demand from stainless steel mills in China.
 
- New Hope Group's $900m expansion of the New Acland Mine in the Darling Downs was thrown out by the Queensland Land Court in a decision that could be the final death knell for the project.

- ExxonMobil management was defeated by a shareholder rebellion over climate change, as investors with 62.3% of shares voted to instruct the oil giant to report on the impact of global measures designed to keep climate change to 2 degrees. 
Ardiden (ASX: ADV) – More thick zones of pegmatite at Seymour Lake
Ardiden continues to make excellent progress with the ongoing Phase 2 resource drilling program at its Seymour Lake Lithium Project in Canada. Multiple shallow and deeper spodumene-bearing pegmatites were intersected in the latest holes, including thick mineralised zones with a combined down-hole width of up to 35m. The results will underpin a maiden JORC resource estimate. Read more
 
Avalon Minerals (ASX: AVI) – Poised for strong news-flow 
Avalon is entering a period of strong news-flow with extensive drilling programs, assay results and other exploration activity ramping up across its three projects. Exploration programs are set to commence in June at the Bramaderos Gold-Copper Project in Ecuador to follow up identified priority areas. Drilling is also expected to commence at the Southern Finland Gold Project in August. Read more

 

EganStreet Resources (ASX: EGA) – Strong metallurgical results 
The WA gold developer received strong initial results from a comprehensive metallurgical test work program on diamond core samples from its Rothsay Gold Project in WA. The results have demonstrated outstanding gold recoveries of up to 96%, which is above the recovery assumed in the PFS announced on 16 May 2017. The results will be included in a DFS due later this year. Read more

 

Kairos Minerals (ASX: KAI) – Strong drilling results from Mt York
All final assay results have been received from the maiden gold drilling program at Kairos’ 258,000oz Mt York Project in WA. A number of near-term resource expansion opportunities have been identified. An ongoing evaluation of lithium potential at Mt York has also identified a southern strike extension of the Pilgangoora LCT pegmatite corridor, south of the world-class Pilgangoora Project. Read more

 

Mustang Resources (ASX: MUS) –  Plant commissioning progressing 
Commissioning of the upgraded processing plant at Mustang’s flagship Montepuez Ruby Project in Mozambique has been highly successful with processing rates now ramping up. The Company is now on track to accumulate a 200,000-carat inventory for initial auction in October 2017. This will provide an opportunity to increase the volume of rubies available for sale. Read more

 
Orinoco Gold (ASX: OGX) – Testwork confirms high grades, recoveries
Orinoco received the results of a successful metallurgical testwork program conducted by Hazen Research which provides independent confirmation of the high-grade nature of the quartz vein lode system at its Cascavel Gold Mine in Brazil, as well as the amenability of the ore to gravity processing. Orinoco said the results showed that the ore was highly (>90%) amenable to gravity recovery. Read more
 
Orion Minerals (ASX: ORN) – Tembo Capital confirms cornerstone stake
Leading mining-focused private equity group Tembo Capital will become cornerstone investor in Orion via a $3M share placement. Orion and Tembo will commence a strategic relationship from the completion of the Placement. The proceeds of the placement and the new strategic relationship will underpin Orion’s strategy to fast-track development of the Prieska VMS Zinc-Copper Mine. Read more
 

Orion Minerals (ASX: ORN) – Update on Prieska Zinc-Copper Project
Orion is maintaining strong momentum with the Deep Sulphide Target drilling program at its Prieska Zinc-Copper Project in South Africa, with drilling set to commence this week. Modelling of mineralisation intersected in diamond drilling at the Level +105 Level Target is also underway with the objective of producing a maiden JORC Mineral Resource to underpin Pre-Feasibility Studies. Read more

 
Sandfire Resources (ASX: SFR) – DeGrussa Mine Plan update
Sandfire announced an updated Mine Plan, Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve for its DeGrussa Copper-Gold Mine. This update includes the DeGrussa, Conductor 1, Conductor 4 and Conductor 5 lenses at DeGrussa and the Monty deposit. Sandfire MD Karl Simich said the new Mine Plan was the first to include a new centre of VMS mineralisation outside the existing cluster of VMS lenses. Read more

 
Spitfire Materials (ASX: SPI) – Initial exploration target for Alice River 
Spitfire provided an update on recent and upcoming exploration activities at the Alice River Gold Project in Queensland, one of two highly prospective Australian gold projects being acquired under its conditional share sale and purchase agreement to acquire unlisted Australian gold company Admiral Gold. Preliminary modelling has defined an initial Exploration Target for Alice River.

Venturex Resources (ASX: VXR) – Salt Creek extended
Venturex received the results of down-hole geophysical surveys that were completed at the Salt Creek deposit, within its 100%-owned Whim Creek Copper-Zinc Project in WA. The results have further extended the down-plunge potential of the high-grade copper and zinc lodes at Salt Creek, demonstrating the prospectivity of the Salt Creek VMS system.  Read more

 
Zinc of Ireland (ASX: ZMI) – High-grade zinc-lead Resource at Kildare
The European-focused base metals company unveiled a maiden high-grade Inferred Resource estimate of 5.2Mt at 8.6% combined Zn+Pb for its Kildare MVT Zinc Project in Ireland. ZMI said recent drilling demonstrated immediate upside to the resource, with assays pending for a recent 20.95m massive sulphide intercept at McGregor. Drilling is continuing at the Kildare Project. Read more
