Robots, I'm home!

It may not be too far off.

Tech journalists are raving about Mother and Keecker—two very different devices unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show this month. While the specifics vary, the underlying notion is the same: These are gadgets programmed to make your life easier. They're the 2014 iterations of The Jetsons's Rosie the Robot, but instead of donning a frilly apron, these devices are sleek, curvy, and intuitive in a whole new way.

Mother, pictured above left, is a Russian doll-shaped robot that comes with "Motion Cookies"—tabs you affix onto items around your home (pitcher, nursery wall, front door) to track incoming data on everything from how much water your family drinks to the temperature of a baby's room to unusual activity while you're out of the home. You can view all the information on a cleanly-designed app, plus get text updates from Mother if, say, your caffeine intake is too high or if your spouse has forgotten to take their medication. It's set to be available in spring 2014 for $222 from Sen.se.

If Mother is all about monitoring, Keecker's aim is more recreational. Essentially a mobile, wireless projector that follows you from room to room, Keecker connects to your smartphone to easily and instantly project your screen—whether it's Netflix, Candy Crush, or email—onto the wall or ceiling. At best, it's the perfect way to turn hunched-over screentime into a more interactive experience (and how much would you rather view the best rooms of 2013 on a giant wall rather than a pocket-sized screen?) Like any good butler, it watches your home while you're away, allowing you to check in via the camera, and measures air quality, humidty, and more, while you're at home. The Keecker is set to launch via Kickstarter for a currently-unknown price. Stay tuned!
