NY Post: All of the stories about mean/out-of-touch Ellen DeGeneres are true

One of the things I’ve enjoyed about the quarantine is that we’ve actually slowed down enough to cancel some people who have deserved it for a long time. Throughout the lockdown, there have been tons of conversations about how, actually, Ellen DeGeneres sucks. Her show is particularly awful in lockdown, and she hasn’t looked after (or PAID) her large TV crew. There have been several big social media conversations about all of the terrible sh-t Ellen has said, done or gotten away with. Well, now the New York Post is piling on. They did a longer piece with unnamed sources describing the various ways Ellen sucks – go here to read the full piece. Some highlights:

Ellen gets away with it: “The stories are all true!” said a former “Ellen DeGeneres Show” staffer of recent reports that the richest comedian in the world is also, allegedly, one of the rudest. “Is she always nice? No,” said the former staffer. “It irritates me that people think she’s all sweetness and light and she gets away with it.”

She doesn’t speak to peasants: A former security guard who served as bodyguard to DeGeneres and her family when the comedian was hosting the 2014 Academy Awards told Fox News that she was very unfriendly. “Ellen pretty much just gave me a side glance out of her eye and didn’t even say ‘hello,’ or ‘thank you for protecting my mother, my wife and me,’” Tom Majercak said. “It was very cold and it was very sly and it was actually kind of demeaning in the way that she treats people other than those who are in her circle.”

The Twitter thread: Podcaster Kevin T. Porter, who started the Twitter thread [about Ellen being awful], told The Post that the star’s not-really-that-nice attitude was an “open secret” in Hollywood and that he had heard numerous stories from friends of his who worked with her. “There’s always been this whisper network about her notorious behavior,” he said. More than 2,250 people posted in the thread. (Porter admits there is no way of vetting the stories.)

She called Steve Jobs: A former associate producer recalled being in Ellen’s office several years ago when the star lost her glasses and couldn’t read a text on her iPhone. “She stopped everything and made a call,” the producer said. “Next thing we know, we literally hear [Apple CEO] Steve Jobs pick up and say ‘Hi, Ellen’ … Ellen told him the iPhone should have a bigger font. That’s her. It’s not that she’s some demon. She just lives in an incredibly privileged bubble and is out of touch with the real world.”

[From The New York Post]

I mean, it irritates me that Ellen’s “Be Kind” motto/branding is being thrown back in her face whenever she’s having a bad day or not play-acting some sweet-as-pie routine. Being performatively kind 24/7 is not realistic. But in Ellen’s case, I think most people would settle for “try not to be cruel all the time.” Because that’s what she is – there’s a casual cruelty to Ellen, and yes, some of it can be explained by how out-of-touch she is these days. I’ve felt for a while now that she doesn’t even LIKE doing her show. She’s been phoning it in for years, which has revealed her true nature – someone who is rather cruel, petty, unfunny and out-of-touch.

Rumours and stories of her actually being quite mean have been floating around for years. Frankly, I believe them. Just watch her ridiculous game show where she seems to take delight in demeaning and humiliating her “average Joe” guests. Some of the pranks are downright cruel and she loves playing mean puppet master.

Not a fan and I look forward to her retirement.

    • Tiffany says:

Anne Heche leaving her seems to have given her a different PR image that she leaned into and had made her the gazillionaire she is today. You cannot ignore the timing of it.

  2. ME says:

Yeah you can see a big change in how she does her show. I stopped watching years ago, but she just doesn’t seem like she enjoys it anymore.

  3. Tiffany says:

Yes, there is a difference between just have a bad day or period of time and whatever Ellen does on a daily basis.

And the Steve Jobs phone call….just…wow.

But I cannot lie, I too have had issues with text font size before you were able to adjust. If I can get the head of a cell phone company on the line, I probably would to talk about this.

    • Lotus says:

The Steve jobs thing doesnt surprise me at all. In my working life I have witnessed CEOs, Vps, and other bigwigs take their minor issues to the top. They genuinely believe they shouldn’t have to talk to a regular person, they want to speak to a director or above bc their issues are way more important.

      • schmootc says:

That crap drives me crazy! Oh, ok, because YOU have an issue, everyone else has to drop everything and deal with whatever you find bothersome because you’re so important? Yeah, no.

      • SURFCHICK says:

I remember hearing the story about Barbara Streisand calling NBC because the volume on a show she was watching was too low. Called the top guy.

  4. AnnaKist says:

We get her show down here. It’s bloody awful and I avoid it like the plague. I can’t stand this woman, and am glad she’s being exposed for the effing bytch she is.

  5. Case says:

I haven’t watched her show in years, but one YouTube clip of it that sticks out to me is her pressuring Saoirse Ronan to play a game where she chooses between male celebrities she finds attractive. Saoirse seemed really uncomfortable, but she was so sweet – instead of just choosing who was “hotter,” she was considering their careers and how nice they seem, etc. And Ellen was so, so nasty to her for that. She kept making fun of her for how she was playing the game, even though she clearly didn’t want to play it in the first place.

It struck me as odd that Ellen of all people would assume someone’s heterosexuality and make them play a game objectifying men. Bizarre.

    • lunchcoma says:

Also, those actors would be her past or potential future coworkers! I’ve never watched Ellen’s show, but that’s a lousy thing to ask of someone.

  6. Christina says:

She’s not the first person to stay in a job she hates to maintain her income, especially super wealthy people, and she won’t be that last. As long as she makes corporations money, she will be able to work. She sounds like she doesn’t consider the people she pays to support her work as worthy since it’s her image that pulls in the money. That’s too bad.

Being that way makes it all fall apart eventually. Not paying her employees during the quarantine like other shows have forced the rumors out of the Hollywood bubble. Now her guests are talking, too. The ones who work in Hollywood keep quiet, because Hollywood is about image and everyone in it knows it’s work, but the non-Hollywood guests I think are surprised by the performative pleasantries of Hollywood talk shows. It’s so different from her image that it’s starting to seep out.

    • SomeChick says:

She has very pretty eyes. But she is clearly not a pretty person. Maybe “pretty” without the r. The pranking thing is schoolboy behavior. We get it – you’re superior. The joke is on everyone but us. Ha ha ha.

  7. Chrissyms says:

She is always pressuring guests into admitting they are pregnant or not pregnant or whatever. She is the worst. The Steve Jobs story is absolutely hilarious though. Made my day.

  8. Jules says:

I’ve never watched her show but I’ve seen clips. The thing she does with scaring people is over the top. Juvenile and mean. And she totally gets off on it, she seems to really enjoy scaring people. Messed up, but she is showing us her true colors, so these reports are not surprising.

    • Tiffany says:

The sloth thing with Kristen Bell is the most I have ever felt bad for Kristen Bell. That was real fear from her and it was being watching by millions of people.

      • Léna says:

Fear of sloth? I think I need to watch it again because I always believe Kristen Bell loved Sloth so much she was too excited and couldn’t contain herself

      • JK says:

Yeh, she wasn’t afraid of the sloth, she loves them! She was overcome that Dax had gotten one to visit for her birthday.

      • Tiffany says:

Hold up, then who was afraid of something and everytime they came on the show Ellen would scare them with it.

I could have sworn it was Kristen. It’s been so long since I have watched it could have been someone else.

    • Case says:

Sarah Paulson talked about how she has trypophobia (fear of clusters of holes) and Ellen had a huge picture on the screen behind them of what freaked her out. I have the same phobia and was so bothered by the fact that she teased her about it.

      • Squirrely Wrath says:

I have it too! I would be so angry if someone intentionally did that to me.

    • Christine says:

Maybe Emma Stone and spiders? I remember seeing a clip around the time she was promoting Spiderman and they had a fake tarantula that Ellen threw at her. Then she pretended they had a “real” tarantula and she threw that one at Emma too.

      • Tiffany says:

Could be Christine. I am going of memory of clips so it could have been Emma and not Kristen.

  9. Amelie says:

I grew up watching Ellen as a kid, her show first premiered when I was in middle or high school I think. It was fresh and fun and after years of being ignored by Hollywood after she came out, it was clear Ellen was so excited to be back in front of people and seemed so grateful to be given another chance. But of course at some point, I’m sure she tired of the same routine over the years. I haven’t watched the show in years now, I just see odd clip on Youtube once in awhile and I see what everyone else sees. She’s bored, just going through the motions, and no longer wants to interview people which is why her awkward, callous remarks thinly masked as humor are no longer passing the litmus test. Her shtick at making guests slightly uncomfortable has gotten to the point that you can tell when guests really don’t even want to be sitting there next to her. It’s interesting to see how you can spot subtle hints of Ellen’s viciousness over the years and now it’s like she’s not even trying to hide it.

I understand late night show hosts getting bored with routine though. Unlike Ellen, Conan has made it no secret he’s sick of doing the same stuff after years of doing it so he retooled his show to just half an hour with one celebrity guest. He is also focusing more on his podcast (which is really good by the way!) and doing travel themed shows mixed with humor. But I don’t see Ellen reinventing herself too much.

I sometimes wonder if the movie Late Night with Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson was inspired by her loosely.

    • Jamie says:

Ooh, I bet you’re right. Emma Thompson’s character does seem to have a lot in common with Ellen.

    • pollyv says:

You’ve said it perfectly. She is painful to watch these days.

  10. Sidewithkids says:

The issue is she became rich and lost sight of where she came from and her power took over. Just another story of that really, sadly. I use to love her show but yes it’s been over about fours ago. I mean it’s the same boring show now b/c she brings on the same guests who like her are rich and have lost touch of what truly matters.

I have to say this too tho why is it when we get stories about women being mean, it becomes such a big deal? Why don’t we hear the same about men? When we hear a story about a man being men he’s called a boss but for a woman, it’s like she’s a b—. Why is it such a big freaking deal to learn a woman is mean?

    • lucy2 says:

While I agree women are held to a higher standard than men, and we absolutely should be calling out the men who behave similarly (I believe there are some James Cordon stories…) in this case, Ellen has capitalized SOOOO much on the “be kind” stuff.

I also think it goes beyond being out of touch, she seems to actively try to be cruel.

    • HK9 says:

You know, it’s not that money made her mean, it’s just that it amplified what was already there. So if she’s mean now, she was probably just as mean when she was poor.

    • Case says:

I agree that women are certainly held to a different standard than men and are far less easily forgiven for their misdeeds. That said, no one should be mean like this and it is a big deal regardless of it’s a man or a woman mistreating staff and guests like she has.

  11. Jenn says:

I never really paid much attention to her, beyond the short clips of her doing good things for people. I caught an episode once, I can’t remember the actress, but Ellen was giving her such a hard time about not being invited to her birthday party. The ‘joke’ went on way too long and made this person visibly uncomfortable. This was the first thing that popped into my head when I started reading about how not nice she is.

    • Amelie says:

That was Dakota Johnson!! Daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, which made it even more awkward for Dakota to school her because she was raised by two very famous parents so she isn’t exactly intimidated by famous people. That was pretty recent too.

  12. Adrien says:

Yes, I get cancelling Ellen but why is Wendy Williams not getting some kind of reckoning? She’s very mean and people seem to just let her get away with it. I know it’s her brand but being fake nice is not worse than being downright rude.

    • Suz says:

I agree with you that Wendy is outright mean. I think the difference is that Wendy doesn’t make millions off of a “Be kind to others” brand. It’s not an excuse for Wendy’s behavior, but people hate hypocrisy. And it makes Ellen look like a fraud that she makes money off of something she’s not.

      • Jamie says:

Also, unless there are stories about Wendy I’ve missed, she seems to be openly mean to other celebrities. But are there stories out there that she’s mean to her staff?

    • Tiffany says:

Wendy has been getting called out for it recently.

      And Adrien, I see you.

    • February Pisces says:

I think Wendy does get called out a lot cos she’s so openly mean. Having said that Ellen pretends to be a saint and a people’s person. Hearing all these stories about her just makes everything about her a lie. What would be a shocking twist is if Wendy was secretly ‘nice’ lol.

    • HK9 says:

I don’t believe Wendy every pretended to be nice.

  13. Mtec says:

I have no doubt Ellen is cruel. I’ve heard enough stories from people who have worked with her that paint a very clear picture. And her recent treatment of her staff during the lockdown just shows another side of it.

BUT these examples given in this article just read like angry men who are mad Ellen isn’t a smiling, bubbly woman and she didn’t receive them as they expected a woman to act around them. That she’s evil because she doesn’t appreciate these men and refused to smile for them. It sounds very sexist.

Sure, her public image is this happy, friendly person, but to be angry with someone for not smiling at you and not going out of her way to be crazy grateful for you doing your job is just tiring to read about. Our society puts way to much pressure on women to hide their feelings and personality behind a facade of being “nice” and “polite” and to constantly be grateful and humble for simply being allowed to exist.

She shouldn’t be cruel, but also she’s not obligated to go out of her way to smile for men to satisfy their egos. That’s bs as well. There are tons of other stories the NY Post could have highlighted. They missed the mark here.

    • Sam the Pink says:

No, this is not sexism. People are not made that she doesn’t smile. They are mad that she’s incredibly wealthy and yet is not paying her staff. They’re mad that she doesn’t extend basic courtesies, like making thanking the man who is, you know, physically protecting you (did we forget that bodyguards are literally putting themselves in potential danger for a job?). Women should not be held to a higher standard than men, but shouldn’t get exceptions either.

And part of that is that she, herself, has crafted this image as some kind of queen of positivity and kindness. That’s an intentional choice on her part. She’s actively cultivated that image and made a LOT of money off of it. So there’s that part too.

I’m sorry, I just hate when faux feminism is used as excuse for shitty women.

      • Mtec says:

        @Sam the pink
I don’t think what I said is faux feminism. I just pointed out how those examples they used are not the best ones and the way it’s presented makes it seem sexist, so it does a disservice to her accusers in this NY Post article because they sound like they’re just mad she wasn’t nice to them.

Harvey Weinstein made a whole career out of being a bully, and no one said a word until finally the tides turned on him. But before that his cruel personality was totally accepted and revered in the very industry Ellen is in. I’ve also heard of how other Male talk show hosts have an attitude but I’ve never heard anyone be that angry with them because they are not “always nice”

IMO the NY Post should have done better at looking and highlighting better sources to speak on her behaviour, because with this bit i just read they just served to feed into the sexist societal problems i spoke about in my first comment.

Also, if you read it back, nothing I said excuses Ellen’s behaviour. I just pointed out how this didn’t serve to prove the point NY Post set out to make.

      • Jules says:

@Sam— “I just hate when faux feminism is used as excuse for shitty women.”
        Exactly!

      • Sam the Pink says:

I’m sorry, you’re not making sense. Harvey Weinstein’s behavior was open knowledge for years. The problem was not a problem of sexism – it was that Harvey (whose behavior you oddly refer to as bullying) THREATENED TO KILL people who challenged him (look it up), destroyed careers, wrecked whole lives. Harvey is not a bully, he is sociopath.

Ellen is not a victim of sexism. It is not sexism to point out when a woman does not do basic decent things. Demanding that your workers not look you in the eye is a bizarre, demeaning power play designed to boost one’s own ego. Not taking the seconds to thank people whose job it is to protect you is crap behavior. Not paying your loyal employees during a lockdown is shitty behavior. None of that is sexism, and you’re grasping to try to spin it as such. There are tons of stories about awful men in the industry. Did you not follow any of the news about Les Moonves? Notoriously awful boss, and nobody cried sexism over him.

The other wrinkle with Ellen is that, unlike any of the men mentioned here, she intentionally and deliberately crafted an image as somebody who promotes kindness and positivity and being nice to others. When that is revealed as a facade, it’s fair to call it out. Sexism doe not play into it – it’s calling out the dissonance between the image that earns Ellen her massive income vs. her actual self.

      • Mtec says:

        @Sam the pink
I’m making sense, you’re just not hearing me over your anger about “faux feminism” or w.e. you’re accusing me of. You really think there’s nothing about the examples the NY Post presented that have to do with the standard our society sets for women to behave a certain way?

Also with Weinstein, yeah all the details of his abuses have finally come to light, but before that no one knew the extent of it. Even celebs who worked with him and thanked him on their speeches knew he was a “bully,” but also said how they didn’t know how bad it all was. So he definitely got away with being an asshole the whole time, and her got really far with that, and so do all the many men like him who assert their power and ego with no apologies and get away with it and make a career out of it, not all of them are threatening people’s lives, they’re just being allowed to be cruel cause no one demands a man be nice and smile for them all the time.

I also mentioned how other male talk shows hosts have had rumours of them being mean, and most all talk show hosts I know of try to portray a nice, friendly image, it’s not just Ellen out there doing that. But you don’t hear staffers calling them out publicly because they are not “always nice.” Notice the staffer is just angry Ellen is not nice “all the time”—no one is nice all the time. This is what i mean when i say the article didn’t pull the best examples it could have.

Again, NOTHING I said excuses Ellen’s behaviour. What about that doesn’t make sense to you? The point of my comments is how the NY Post didn’t do good job presenting the real problem with her and it came off as sexist. Critically pointing out the misguided viewpoint presented in an article does not “faux feminism” make. The NY Post should have done better, I’ve personally read way more thorough stories of Ellen’s cruelty—“not always being nice” and “not saying thank you” are not some of them.

    • MA says:

      +1 MTEC

I’ve had a problem with Ellen for years due to some …”quirks” she has when interviewing POC. Not outright racism but somewhat offensive behavior. Though to be fair this is not exclusive to her, other white male hosts do the same.

And I can believe she’s mean, there were worse stories mentioned in that Twitter thread but I guess the NYPost couldn’t verify it legally. So this article really misses the mark with the “shes not always nice” comment with no specific stories and the Steve Jobs story is lame. Any one of us could probably say our bosses have been “not nice” to us without being abusive. And the bodyguard thing is meh. It’s rude of her but also why is it news? Him publicly calling her out and wanting thanks for performing his job rubs me the wrong way. Again, not good manners but not crossing any lines.

It’s annoying because a real expose on her would be useful. Instead we perpetuate this tired expectation that celebrities always be “on” and perfect, yet we also deride those that are always “on” for being fake.

  14. SJR says:

Is Ellen wealthier than Jerry Seinfeld or Larry David?

    If so..that is BS!
I’ve never found her to be funny and why isn’t she paying her crew?
    Bitch!

    • Ann says:

She isn’t. Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David are both likely going to be billionaires by the end of their lives because Seinfeld (the show) continues to earn them money and has not lost any value. Nobody is going to be watching reruns of any of Ellen’s shows decades after they air. She’s made a good chunk of change but she is not on par with Seinfeld at all.

    • minx says:

That stood out to me—richest comedian? Doubtful.
I hope she’s hearing these stories although she probably doesn’t care.

  15. Sam the Pink says:

These conversations always remind me of Fred Rogers. People always seemed shocked to meet him and basically get the same guy from the show – that WAS him. But he did that intentionally. He assumed (correctly) that people can spot a fake and that you’d be better off being honest.

I don’t like chalking it up to her being “privileged.” I have met wealthy people, and many of them still take the time to shake hands, thank service staff, and be, you know, decent. It’s not hard to thank a waiter, bodyguard, or employee. It takes no time or money. She is not “just privileged.” She’s an asshole.

  16. jaylee says:

Can we just burn the whole kindness slogan to the ground? The “be kind” t-shirts & coffee mugs….”kindness is gangster” yoga tanks. The only thing I like about the trend is it helps me identify the assholes without having to speak to them.

  17. Sean says:

Watch, Ellen will eventually retire her talk show to host an extremely mean-spirited version of Candid Camera or Punk’d.

    Oh God, I shouldn’t give her ideas…

  18. Meghan says:

I don’t particularly like her or watch her show, but the security guard complaint seems weird to me. Is it common to thank someone for…doing their job? I mean if he had saved her life or walked her to her car or something then sure, a thank you is appropriate.

Maybe I’m just a rude person but I don’t thank the security guard at my work, unless he walks me to my car at night or something.

    • lucy2 says:

I think his particular complaints are a bit overblown too, and going on Fox News years later to whine about it says a lot about him, IMO.
That said, she could at the very least say hello, and then at the end of the night say thanks.

    • Elizabeth says:

I think his point was that he was right next to her and her wife and mother the whole time protecting them and she never acknowledged him. Not even to say hello. It’s not cool for a rich powerful person to treat their employees or help like garbage. Yes if you have an employee you should be greeting and thanking them as a matter of common courtesy. They’re people, not machines, not slaves. The point is also that it ties into her behavior on a larger scale with not paying her employees during the pandemic… really awful.

    • Sam the Pink says:

Yes, you should thank people for doing their jobs well. Should I not thank the waitstaff at restaurants? Should I not say thank you to my bus driver in the morning? Thanking people for doing their job is good manners. I teach it to my children.

Also, I think a bodyguard is worth thanking. The whole point of them is that, if danger arises, they put themselves in a dangerous position to protect you. Yeah, why not thank you?

      • Meghan says:

@sam the pink- okay I read that wrong and he was acting as a bodyguard and definitely deserved a greeting and a thank you. I was thinking he was more of just general security hanging around the Academy Awards and was upset that she wasn’t thanking him personally for just being present as part of a team.

And thinking about it, if I am leaving somewhere that has a security station I do say “thank you, good night!”

  19. AMM says:

I remember in her most recent stand up she even brought up that she regrets being associated with “be kind”. Because now people expect her to be kind 24/7 and she cant be caught having a bad day. I get it. The only unforgivable thing is how shes treating her staff. The rest just seem like a human person not behaving like fans would expect her too because she labeled herself as the new Mr Rogers.

She seems super over her show, over the nice persona and ridiculously privileged. I dont think shes the devil, I’m sure she has good moments and genuinely does care about some good things. I think shes burnt out and grumpy and needs to just retire.

  20. Ann says:

I get a good amount of schadenfreude from these Ellen stories. I’ve never liked her. I’ve always found her to be unfunny and quite mean spirited. If I was a celebrity I would never go on her show because I hate being startled. Who enjoys it? Nobody, which I’m sure includes Ellen. She is a phoney who never makes me laugh. I hope the downfall is swift cause I’ve been over this woman for long enough.

  21. Other Renee says:

I thought her last stand up special was awful. I didn’t laugh at all. There have also been rumors about how badly she treats Portia, her wife. I thought they were just rumors but now I bet there’s truth there as well.

    • H says:

I read Portia’s autobiography. While Portia has her own issues, some of the things she wrote about Ellen made me side-eye her. I’ve never liked Ellen or thought she was funny.

  22. Seraphina says:

Yes I recall seeing her terrify guests too. It’s almost like she gets a thrill out of it, if you watch her face. And I would see her do this to Celebrities and I was completely zoned in because I was like, no way is she really doing this.

  23. Sorella says:

No longer a fan, she has been mean in recent years and looks like someone who HATES their job. I always thought maybe she wasn’t as nice as she wanted the public to think she is.

And doing it from home, the Ellen cracks are REALLY opening up – she is not funny and doing her show from home – YIKES it is so obvious!! Without a laugh track, it is even more apparent, her jokes land like a thud!! And I now realize even more that her show really just shows clips from Tik Tok or youtube or whatever and just highlights what the PUBLIC already made viral – so not original at all. She needs others to tell her what is funny and going viral before she finds it and then just leaps her jokes off of these viral finds. She is NOT naturally funny. Even the live studio dancing is more funny coming from her audience and her co-host than her. And of course she gives away prizes, money etc to make herself look KIND – but that’s Network money – easy to be generous with other people’s money!!! But as we can now see, she is not generous with her own money by not paying her employees – her peasants!! Nope, when she comes on TV now I switch it!

  24. Coco says:

But is any of this affecting her ratings? It’s possible more people are watching lately, because A. there are more people at home B. people who don’t usually watch are curious to see her be awful.

    • brinibini says:

I don’t know about her ratings, but her Youtube hits aren’t what they used to be.

  25. Starkiller says:

I am no fan of DeGeneres (have never found her to be funny at all), but I truly don’t understand how any of these alleged “misdeeds” of hers equate to being mean or not nice. There is a strange phenomenon in America where if you are not constantly bubbly, over the top, treating people you just met like your best friend, fake smile constantly plastered on your face with hundreds of fake “friends”, you are mean, not nice, rude, a bítch, etc. Be kind and polite, sure, but not everyone has to be your best friend and you don’t have to gush over every last person you come into contact with. I don’t get it. This is not how people act in most of the world.

    • brinibini says:

She allegedly forces her staff members to take in animals that she adopted.
She allegedly got someone fired who was slightly autistic and forgot that he wasn’t allowed to talk or look at her, and he liked greeting people.
      She’s not paying her crew.
She tried to make Mariah Carey drink alcohol to prove that she was pregnant.
She’s friends with a war criminal.
This has nothing to do with not being bubbly or sweet, she’s a mean person who made a career of pretending to be kind to others.

    • MA says:

This. And it seems like this expectation or standard is way harsher on women, like men telling women to smile.

    • A.Key says:

I hear you. Europeans aren’t outwardly friendly like Americans but once we get to know you and bond, we stay true friends for life. In America everyone’s super friendly and fake nice to everyone all the time but in reality nobody has real friends nor do they mean what they say. It’s all a show there, as long as you play nice on the outside nobody cares what you’re really like when it matters. As if smiling and saying “good morning” means you’re actually a good person who will be there for others…yeah no it doesn’t. You can be the rudest grump and still be an amazing best friend, I know I have one, and I wouldn’t exchange her for all the pleasant smiling people in the world.

  26. Awkward symphony says:

I never liked her and her whole random dancing and cringy jokes was so uncomfortable to watch. Glad alot of people are catching up to her true self. Her and chrissy Teigen should take time off to contemplate their actions.

  27. Who ARE these people? says:

In those pictures she looks like her pal Dubya (george w. Bush).

  28. Ann says:

I never thought Ellen was nice, and I don’t think her BFF Jen Aniston is the girl next door either. They both can be mean and passive aggressive.

  29. sherry says:

I don’t watch her show, but I’ve seen her on The Tonight Show a few times and her unpleasantness just oozes out. It’s like what she’s doing is beneath her, and she has no sense of humour at all.

  30. BrNic says:

I believe it. As long as she has the middle-aged ww demo, she’ll always be fine though. And she can always get popular people and A-list celebs on the show, especially because of CAA. I remember when the George Bush stuff happened, a whole bunch of CAA clients went to social media to repost her response segment or promote the kindness stuff for her. End of the show will be her choice. The only negative will probably only be comments.

  31. Guest with Cat says:

Wow, I never knew she was known to be mean. I don’t watch her talk show. But I watched her sitcom back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. I saw some of her stand-up comedy somewhere and thought it was funny and cute. I saw her as a judge on American Idol and honestly can’t remember a thing about her on that show. I just used to like her goofy self deprecating sense of humor whenever she would pop up somewhere. She seemed once upon a time to NOT be full of herself.

I haven’t really been paying attention, I guess. I have only ever seen very select, brief clips from her show and those were funny.

It’s really rather disappointing and disheartening to find out not only is she not “nice” but she’s actively unkind and isn’t paying the people who contributed all these years to her success and she damn well can afford to pay them or do something for them.

How does she say one thing so convincingly and do the direct opposite in practice? How does she reconcile the disconnect between what she claims to believe and how she actually acts? Being kind is easier than being mean. So get on with it, woman.

  32. A.Key says:

Funny how women always have to be super polite, cheerful and smiling, otherwise they’re labeled nasty b…. I haven’t read one complaint about male CEO’s not smiling or thanking their workers as something to be ashamed of. Men I guess have no time to worry about being nice to others while they’re being in charge and that’s ok. Women on the other hand….god forbid we’re not kissing everyone’s behinds 24/7.

I think poor Ellen’s problem is that she’s a sarcastic European soul living in America where everyone has to fake smile all the time and pretend like they care when they really don’t. If she were British or French or Eastern European these articles wouldn’t exist and people would find them ridiculous.
