Gunshot fired outside elementary school in Lancaster; no injuries reported

Lancaster police rushed to Martin Luther King Elementary School, where a single gunshot was reportedly fired by one of two men in the playground area.

The shot was fired at 2:48 p.m. Wednesday outside the school at 455 S. Duke St., according police.

Dispatchers spoke with an anonymous caller who said two men had been in the area of the school playground when one of the men fired a single shot from a handgun, according to a city police news release. Both men then fled on foot, police said.

City police Sgt. Bill Hickey confirmed that no students were on the playground at the time.

No injuries were reported and no property damage was discovered by police, who did find a single shell casing in the southwest corner of the playground, Hickey said in email.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown, but students were released to their parents after police found no sign of either man in the area, according to the news release.

The men were last seen running eastbound on Green Street from Rockland Street, according to police.
