On January 15, 2014 I did an informal email survey to see examples of how people were linking finding aids (EAD XML or HTML) to digital objects on the Web. The intent was to see if there were common patterns for doing this linking, in order to inform linking practices at my institution. But I thought the first step would be gather examples. I contacted the following discussion lists:
I received 45 responses which are included in the email.mbox file in this repository. Below is a summary of the responses grouped by institution. You can see that ocassionally multiple people (sometimes from another institution) mentioned the same institution.
If you'd like to add to this list please email ehs@pobox.com or fork the repository, add it to the README.md (which you are reading now) and send me a pull request.

- The approach documented in our best practices is to link to digital content from either the container list or at the collection level; see http://orbiscascade.org/index/cms-filesystem-action/nwda/tools/nwdabpg_v3.7_20121105.pdf, "describing and linking to digital items from the collection, page 10. This approach works so long as you have durable digital content links (which you don't in CONTENTdm), but the user experience is less than optimal. For an example of this in action, see http://nwda.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv49545
- The approach that we have taken in the IMLS-funded Cross-Search and Context Utility project (demonstration site at http://www5.iath.virginia.edu/nwda/prototype/) is to relate digital objects with their collections through MODS records. This approaches these links from the digital object side rather than through the structure of the finding aid.
